Helen J. Caton, 61, of Meyersdale, died Friday, January 4, 2013, in Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
She was born June 7, 1951, a daughter of the late George and Helen Dominski Nicola.
Surviving are her husband of 34 years, Robert “Bob” Caton; son Matthew Caton and wife Sabrina of Meyersdale; stepdaughters Bobbi Caton and fiance Jeff Robertson and Holly Broadwater and husband Jeremy, all of Berlin; grandchildren Jacob Baer, Zachary, Abigail and Chloe Broadwater, Mahlon Robertson and wife Kayla and Cody Robertson; great-grandson Deegan; sister Elizabeth Ann Mader and husband Daniel of Washington; and nieces and nephews and their children, Daniel Mader and wife Sandi and son Daniel, Melissa Bulger and husband Bob and children Ashten, Hunter, Marra and Rainier, Jason Mader and Jennifer Fetterman and husband Kevin and daughter Addison.
Mrs. Caton worked at Tableland Services as a caseworker for 22 years.
She was a member of SS. Philip and James Catholic Church in Meyersdale. She was a founder of the Meyersdale Red Hat Club and Salvation Army, Meyersdale Unit, past president of Meyersdale Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, board member of the Berlin Historical Society, Meyersdale Food Pantry and Meyersdale Angel Tree. She helped coordinate the New Republic’s “Operation Santa,” Christmas Bazaar at the Meyersdale Community Center and organized “Little Miss Chickentown.” She received the Meyersdale Citizen of the Year Award and was a recipient of the Somerset County Salute to Women Award. She was known as the “Mother of Meyersdale.”
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, in SS. Philip and James Catholic Church, Meyersdale, with the Rev. James M. Dugan as celebrant. Committal will follow in Sarver Church Cemetery.
