Mary Ellen Hensel

Mary Ellen Hensel, 104, of Newton, N.C., formerly of Montgomery, Ala., died Saturday, January 5, 2013.

She was born May 23, 1908, in Gray’s Landing, a daughter of George P. and Bessie Mae Smith Hensel.

Miss Hensel was Protestant.

A retired physical therapist, she received her registered nursing degree from Washington Hospital in 1934 and her registered physical therapist degree from New York University in 1949.

She served in the U.S. Navy Nursing Corps during World War II from September 22, 1942, to September 27, 1945. She was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

In 1968, she spent time working at a leprosy hospital in Thailand.

Miss Hensel was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, William B., Robert P., J. Willard and George Sheldon Hensel, and a sister, Ruth Mumaw.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, 219 Main Street, Claysville. Private interment services will be held at a later date in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.
