Flora H. Clarke of Friendship Village, Upper St. Clair, formerly of Canonsburg and a longtime resident of McMurray, died Saturday, January 12, 2013, after a short illness.
She was born February 21, 1921, in West Newton, a second child of Paul and Magdalina Wagner Hofmann.
Mrs. Clarke attended West Newton schools, skipping a grade and graduating with honors. Subsequently, despite having the use of only one hand as a result of a childhood injury, she graduated from McKeesport Hospital School of Nursing, No. 1 in her class, and was voted “Outstanding Nurse.” Thereafter, she obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing.
She worked at Children’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital, and thereafter returned to her alma mater. Retiring from full-time nursing, she did private duty for various local doctors and was a substitute nursing teacher at Washington Vo Tech. Because of her nursing ability, on five separate occasions over the years she saved the lives of a neighborhood child, two neighbors and two other acquaintances.
On May 16, 1944, she married Clifford W. Clarke, P.E., who died December 28, 1988.
Mrs. Clarke was an original member of Trinity Methodist Church in McMurray, was instrumental in the formation of Peters Township Public Library and served on its board of directors for many years, and was a Washington County Republican committeewoman, an accomplished bridge player, a devoted and knowledgeable Steelers fan and a supporter of the Mel Blount Youth Home.

Clarke, Esq., and wife Victoria Dally of McMurray; a grandson, Jordan of Canonsburg; two granddaughters, Ashley of Upper St. Clair and Amanda Greene (Daniel) of Avella and their child, her great-grandson, Dexter; a nephew, John (Jack) Peters of California; and her beloved niece, Jane Peters of Pittsburgh.
