Mary Ethel LeClere-Wagner-Welling, 96, a lifelong resident of Fredericktown, was called to the Lord peacefully Monday, January 21, 2013, surrounded by her family, in her home.
She was born June 28, 1916, the only daughter of the late William and Bessie LeClere.
In June 1940, she married Albert John Wagner, who died in an accident at Fort Knox Army Base in 1944. They had one child, Carol Ann Wagner-Gindlesperger-Burgess, who survives. She raised her as a single mother.
Also surviving are her beloved granddaughter, Holly Branch; great-grandchildren Walker, Edgar and Samuel; a son-in-law, Robert Burgess; grandsons Garry Burgess, Clark Keller and Kyle Burgess (Michele); great-grandchildren Harrison and Scarlett; granddaughter Amy Troiani; and great-grandchildren Benjamin Burgess, Ella and Julius Troiani.
Mrs. Welling was a 1935 graduate of East Bethlehem Township High School.
She was a lifelong member of Fredericktown United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 57 years, and played either or both piano and organ for services there. She was involved in organizing the junior choir in the 1930s, taught Bible school, was a Youth Fellowship Counselor and a member of the Women’s Society, now United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Welling was a financial secretary of Fredericktown Methodist Church starting in 1968 but because of failing health, she retired from the position in 2005. Before marriage, she worked at the Fredericktown Post Office and for a brief time, after her husband’s death, she worked at Lazovicks Department store.
She was a member of the Civil Defense and was one of the organizers for the youth center in Fredericktown during the 1950s. She was once a member of Rebekah Lodge located in Millsboro.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 24, with Chaplain Bernatdette Moore officiating. Interment will be in Fredericktown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to Fredericktown Library, P.O. Box 62, Fredericktown, PA 15333.
