Frederick J. Frank

Frederick J. Frank, 92, of Washington, died Sunday, January 20, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born February 2, 1920, in Johnstown, a son of the late George and Ethel Higham Frank.

Mr. Frank was a 1938 graduate of Johnstown High School and received his bachelor of science degree in 1947, his master of science degree in 1951 and his doctorate in higher education in 1975, all from the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1947, he joined the faculty of Washington & Jefferson College, where he entered into a career in administration in 1952, serving as director of admissions, then dean of student personnel, and finally dean of institutional planning. He retired as dean emeritus in 1985.

Mr. Frank served his country as an aviator in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he flew a patrol bomber. He flew during the battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, as well as serving in the Atlantic Theater. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He flew the Martin Mariner, the U.S. Navy’s largest aircraft, during his tenure. He also served for a short time with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Surviving are two sons, Frederick J. (Pamela) Frank Jr. of Pittsburgh and T. Scott (Sarah) Frank of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, George (Virginia) Frank of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandchildren, Mary Frank and Natalie (Michael) Bader; a niece, Catherine Fauber of Asheville, N.C.; and a nephew, John Frank of High Point, N.C.

Deceased is his wife, Jeanne Frank, who died November 11, 2012.

There will be no visitation. Friends are welcome to attend a service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 26, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, with John R. Warner officiating. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Frederick J. and Frances Jeanne Frank Prize for Leadership in the Communication Arts, c/o Washington & Jefferson College, 60 South Lincoln Street, Washington, PA 15301.
