Homemaker, wife and mother loved animals

Charlotte Anne Underwood Smith, 85, of Rockport, Maine, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013, peacefully in her home, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born March 3, 1928, a daughter of the late Charles and Genevra Underwood of Winchester, Mass.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Stephen’s College in Missouri.

In 1949, she married Duncan Bruce Smith and they made their home in Pennsylvania. She was a homemaker, wife and mother who loved horses, dogs and cats. She could always be found with a dog in her lap or at her feet. She loved having family and friends visit her in Rockport or taking a trip to Pennsylvania to visit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the farm that she loved.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Mayflower Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Tuesday Breakfast Club, Pigeon Cove Circle, Sandy Bay Yacht Club, Rockport Historical Society and Morris Township Historical Society.

Surviving are two sons, Duncan B. Smith II and wife Aileen and Doug Smith and wife Pegg, all of Prosperity; daughter Heather Chandler and husband Steven of New York; grandchildren Charles Smith and wife Pamela, Andrew Smith and wife Tiffany and Michael Smith, all of Prosperity, Duncan Bruce Smith III of Donora and Meghan and Christopher Chandler, both of New York; four great-grandchildren, Debra, Tyler, Dylan and Drew, all of Prosperity; and her dearest neighbors/friends, Dan Piering and Dossie Campbell.

Deceased is her husband, D. Bruce Smith.

In life, Mrs. Smith loved to entertain and welcomed all into her home, so in keeping with her wishes, an open house in Rockport and Prosperity with family and friends will be held at a later date. There will be no visiting hours and the burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory to Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
