Ralph Ellwood Canfield, 83, of Washington, formerly of San Diego, Calif., died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington, following a nine-month illness.
He was born October 1, 1929, in Washington, a son of the late Everett and Anne Cummins Canfield.
Mr. Canfield was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War and earned a Bronze Star.
He was employed as a machinist by Star Mould and Star Dynamics. He was a talented woodworker and cook. He also was a farmer and construction worker.
Being a devout Christian, he completed a correspondence course with the Moody Bible Institute, studying Old Testament courses. He was a charter member and original elder of Living Stone Community Church of Washington.
On April 25, 1963, he married Mona Ellis, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Patricia Canfield (John Wilson) of Hideaway Lake, Texas, Megan (Kenneth) Ganser of Canonsburg and Cristin Krajnak of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Jessica, Erica, Jackson and Brendan Ganser and Caleb and Levi Krajnak; and a sister, Judith Brown of Los Gatos, Calif.
Deceased are two sisters, Jean Shoberg and Ruth Thompson, and three brothers, William, John and Everett Canfield Jr.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor and Douglas M. Jones, director, where friends may gather at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, to form a procession to Washington Cemetery for committal prayers, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in Living Stone Community Church, 265 North Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Paul T. Harrington officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Living Stone Community Church. American Legion Post 175 and the U.S. Army will provide graveside military rites. An additional memorial service will be held in Hideaway Lake, Texas. Messages of condolence may be left at www.hummellandjones.com.
