U.S. Steel retiree, avid outdoorsman

Earl V. Pigford, 91, of Finleyville, Somerset Township, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He was born October 1, 1921, in New Eagle, a son of the late Earl F. and Ruth Ford Pigford.

After his retirement as a foreman from U.S. Steel’s Irvin Works Plant, he went back to work at Millcraft Industries in Washington, where he worked in the assembly department, until his retirement in 1979.

Mr. Pigford attended Monongahela schools and was a member of Edwards Chapel United Methodist Church in Finleyville. For more than 50 years, he was a member of Henry M. Phillips Masonic Lodge in Monongahela. He was also member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon in Washington, Coudersport Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, and a past member of the Shriners of Pittsburgh.

With his beloved wife “Dean” of 72 years, they enjoyed playing cards with their Friday night group. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting at his camp in Elk County, camping and spending time with his family.

On November 28, 1940, in Houston Methodist Church, he married Gordena B. “Dean” Bailey Pigford, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Thomas (Nancy) Pigford of Washington; a daughter, JoAnn (Gene) Marraccini of New Eagle; a sister, Dolores (David) Duvall of Bentleyville; three grandchildren, Geneann Ashcraft (Jamie Krempasky), Mark (Faith) Marraccini and Lee (Joanne) Pigford; and eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Brianna Ashcraft, Rachel, Anthony and Natalie Marraccini, Patrick and Jeremy Pigford and Olivia George.

Deceased are a daughter, Carol E. Pigford, who died as an infant, and a granddaughter, Marci Pigford-George, who died in 2003.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, 724-258-6767, www.marshallmarrafuneralhome.com, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, with the Rev. Richard Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery.
