Retired pilot served in Navy
Daniel J. Malone, 75, of Irving, Texas, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013.
He was born May 22, 1938, in Canonsburg, a son of the late James A. Sr. and Carmel DeVitis Malone.
Mr. Malone’s aviation career began as a NAVCAD in Pensacola, Fla., in 1958. After eight years as a U.S. Navy pilot, flying P2Vs and S2Fs, he joined Braniff International Airlines in Dallas, Texas. Later, he flew with Piedmont Airlines in Charlotte, N.C., flying 737s. With the airline merger, he retired in November 1995 from US Airways.
He was an astronomy buff, enjoyed cowboy action shooting and golf with friends.
Mr. Malone was a friend to everyone and had a very generous nature.
Surviving are wife Helen Rose Saver, with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary July 16, 2013; sister Mary Ellen (Bob) Zinn; sisters-in-law Barbara (Ron) Cianelli and Lois Malone; five nieces, four nephews, nine great-grandnieces and four great-grandnephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are sister Rose Anne (Malone) Laidella and brother James A. Malone Jr.
Friends are welcome from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of a blessing service, Saturday, July 27, in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full military honors will be accorded by the combined honor guards of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
