2011 Fort Cherry grad completed degree from PTI

Joseph Michael Bowland, 20, of McDonald, died Saturday, July 27, 2013, in Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center.

He was born February 27, 1993, in Warren, Ohio, a son of Todd Bowland of Elkhart, Ind., and Kelly Marie Brackman Bowland of McDonald.

Mr. Bowland was a 2011 graduate of Fort Cherry High School and just graduated with an associate’s degree in electronic engineering from Pittsburgh Technical Institute.

He worked as a manager of the family pizza shop.

Mr. Bowland enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed playing basketball, baseball and along with his friend, Dillon, and all his friends, they called themselves the “Taylor Gang.”

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Heather Bowland and Lisa Bowland, both of McDonald; two brothers, Jeff Bowland of Bulger and Jacob Bowland of McDonald; maternal grandfather Boyce (the late Patricia) Brackman of McDonald; paternal grandparents Jack and Centa Bowland of Paris; and five nieces and a nephew.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald. Everyone is asked to meet at Calvary Center of McDonald Presbyterian Church, 202 West Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 2. A committal service will follow in Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald.

1934-2013

Christine Giering Dougherty, 79, of Kingston, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, July 27, 2013, in Sharon Regional Hospital.

She was born April 19, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Eugene T. Giering Jr. and Mary Catherine Farrell Giering.

On January 4, 1958, in St. Theresa Church, she married Robert L. Dougherty Jr., who died February 11, 1994.

Surviving are five children, Robert L. Dougherty III and wife Laura of Wexford, Mary Catherine Dougherty, M.D., and husband Scott Keay of Sharon, Jennifer A. Berlatsky and husband Eric, Ph.D., of Boynton Beach, Fla., Genie Grimes and husband Eric of Odenton, Md., and Charles J. Dougherty and fiancé Ashley Miller of Burgettstown; 10 grandchildren, Kearsie, Calene, Kevin and Christopher Dougherty, James Keay, Katherine and Julia Berlatsky, Andrew and Avery Christine and Matthew Grimes; two sisters, Joan G. Lavinio and husband Thomas of Southhampton, N.Y., and Catherine Rodda and husband Thomas M.D. of Greenwich, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Lee and Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown. Additional vistiation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hugh P. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 416 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 1, in St. Ignatius of Loyola Roman Catholic Church, 339 North Maple Avenue, Kingston. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Willa E. Dowler, 98, of Midway, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, in Molinaro Manor.

She was born August 7, 1914, in Burgettstown, a daughter of the late Harry B. and Bena Miller Walker.

Mrs. Dowler was a homemaker.

She was a member of Center United Presbyterian Church in Midway, where she previously served as a deacon and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed being active in her church and spending time with her family.

Surviving are a son, Richard (Gerry) Dowler of Midway; a daughter, Marian (John Wesley) Loffert of North Carolina; grandchildren Wesley and Milton Loffert, Janice Fisher, Rebecca Roper, Jeffrey Dowler and Rita Bailey; 16 great-grandchildren; and brothers Fred Walker of Cross Creek and Jay (Shirley) Walker of Hickory.

Deceased are her husband, George Kenneth Dowler, in May 1994; brothers Wilbert, William, Leroy and Raymond Walker; and sister Freda Ziegler.

2010 Fort Cherry grad was laborer, avid dirt bike racer

Michael Dillon Gregg, 22, of Bulger, died Saturday, July 27, 2013, in Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center.

He was born March 13, 1991, in Pittsburgh, a son of Michael W. (Aleta) Gregg of Washington and Lisa Marie Lower Gregg of Bentleyville.

Mr. Gregg was a 2010 graduate of Fort Cherry High School.

He worked as a laborer for Howard Concrete Pumping of Cuddy.

Mr. Gregg was a member of Laborers Union 1058, American Motorcycle Association, Pennsylvania Brawlers Team and Cage of Chaos.

He was an avid dirt bike racer and enjoyed both rifle and bow hunting. He and all his friends called themselves the “Taylor Gang.”

Surviving, in addition to his mother and father, are maternal grandmother Betty (the late Vernon) Lower of Grand Island, Fla.; two uncles, Larry Gregg III and Scott Lower; four aunts, Pamela Guy, Vickie Baxter, Brenda Bittner and Amy Kohlmeyer; and 10 cousins.

Deceased are paternal grandparents Emily and Larry Gregg Jr.

Loved her children, enjoyed animals

Michelle McGowan Hoye, 44, of Scenery Hill, died Friday, July 26, 2013.

She was born January 26, 1969, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., a daughter of Thomas and Bonita Garrett McGowan of Scenery Hill.

Mrs. Hoye was a graduate of Trinity High School.

She was Methodist.

Mrs. Hoye had worked as a safety coordinator for Alex Paris Contracting.

She loved her children, and enjoyed animals, especially dogs and horses.

On June 9, 1990, she married John Vance Hoye Jr., who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Shane (Tiffany Lindsay) Hoye and Andrew Hoye and fiancée Paige Barnhart, both of Scenery Hill; a sister, Sheryl Baker of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews, Kyler Baker and Joshua (Veronica) McGowan; and three great-nieces, Riley, Alana and Cailyn.

WWII vet, piano tuner loved playing the guitar

H. Kermit Jarvis, 87, of Wind Ridge, died at 6 a.m. Sunday, July 28, 2013, in Washington Hospital, after being in failing health for the past several years.

He was born February 17, 1926, in Jeffery, W.Va., a son of the late Howard and Winnie Massey Jarvis.

Mr. Jarvis had resided in the Rogersville and Wind Ridge areas since 1958. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Graysville.

He was a 1943 graduate of Gassaway, W.Va., High School.

Mr. Jarvis was a veteran of World War II, having served as a corporal with the U.S. Army Air Force 2532nd Base Unit at Randolph, Texas Field, where he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory and Good Conduct medals.

He and his late wife, Maggie, co-owned and operated the former Jarvis Lunch in Rogersville from 1963 until 1968. He was employed as a well tender by the former Columbia Gas Transmission Corp. at the former Majorsville station, for more than 30 years, prior to retiring in 1990.

Mr. Jarvis was a member of American Legion Post 330 in Waynesburg and the former Columbia Gas Quarter Century Club.

He was nicknamed “the guitarman” because of his love of playing the guitar and he tuned pianos in the area, as long as his health permitted. He enjoyed fishing and working in his woodshop.

On July 5, 1945, he married Mary Margaret “Maggie” Mullins, who died August 22, 1991. On September 5, 1992, he married Carolyn Marie Malone, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Robert L., husband of Sharon Jarvis of Indiana, James H., husband of Jeanie Jarvis of Claysville and Donald W., husband of Connie Jarvis of Rogersville; two stepchildren, Major William, husband of Robin Scritchfield of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Dorothy, wife of Chris Halford of Jeffersonville, Ind.; five grandchildren, Robbie, Michael and Brad Jarvis, Brenda Jarvis Batis and Jamie Jarvis Gentile; six stepgrandchildren, Lee, Sara, Katie and Kristie Scritchfield and Dakota and Noah Riley; four great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and first wife, are two brothers, Keith and Kenneth Jarvis; three sisters, Velma Hicks, Audrey Cantley and Delores Cozad; a stepdaughter, Brenda Farabee; and a stepgranddaughter, Melissa Farabee.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, with Rev. Bruce Judy officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Richhill Township. Graveside military rites will be accorded by representatives of the U.S. Army and the American Legion Post 330 of Waynesburg.

William E. Menni, 58, of McKees Rocks, died Friday, July 26, 2013.

1953-2013

Patricia Louise Nixon passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013, in Thomas Campbell Apartments, Washington.

She was born July 28, 1953, a daughter of James W. Nixon of Washington and the late Patricia L. Donnely Nixon.

Ms. Nixon grew up in Washington and was a 1971 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.

After high school, she enrolled in the U.S. Army, with her husband, until she became pregnant to start her family.

She worked for many years, and also attended California University of Pennsylvania. She was a member of many clubs in the Washington area.

Surviving, in addition to her father, are a daughter, Christina Louise Louk of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Nathan Louk and Eleanor and Onja Dessify; two sisters, Diana Craig and Debbie Trojan; a brother, Ricky Nixon; and longtime companion Marty Mey.

Belle Vernon resident

Sherry Lynn Meloy Terrant, 51, of Belle Vernon, passed peacefully after a courageous battle Saturday, July 27, 2013.

She was the beloved wife of William Anthony “Tony” Terrant for 24 years; daughter of Dorothy and the late Kenneth Meloy; granddaughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Barati; sister of Joe Meloy, Deb Meloy and Peggy Lloyd; and friend of Dom DiClaudio.

Mrs. Terrant was a licensed barber, who went on to manage a beauty supply store. At the time of her death, she was employed as an assistant manager of a Goodwill store.

She leaves an uncle and three aunts; many cousins; a niece; two nephews; and a great-niece and two great-nephews.

Mrs. Terrant loved the outdoors, camping, fishing and riding a dirt bike.

Her loved ones will certainly miss her.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, where a service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 30. A graveside service will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park.
