United Airlines retiree from Mt. Pleasant Township

Raymond R. McConaghy of Cherry Valley Lakeview Estates, Mt. Pleasant Township, was eased into his Heavenly Father’s arms by his loving family Monday, June 3, 2013.

He and his wife, Julia Talerico McConaghy, were married for 55 years. They are the parents of nine children, Ray Jr., Karen Rush, Diane Kelly, Sandra Calhoun, Gary McConaghy, Anthony McConaghy, Blaise McConaghy and Christian McConaghy. Their son, Matthew, is deceased. They are awaiting the arrival of their 19th grandchild and have two great-grandchildren.

Mr. McConaghy was a son of the late Alex and Anna J. Voskuhl McConaghy.

Surviving, in addition to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is a brother, Charles from Scott Township.

Deceased, in addition to his son, are three brothers, John Regis, William and Bernard.

He was a graduate of Crafton High School, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and attended classes at the University of North Carolina while in the U.S. Marine Corps. He held a private pilot license with an instrument rating.

Mr. McConaghy was a former member and past president of Fort Cherry School Board and Boosters Club. He was a member of Robinson Township Municipal Authority and McDonald Lions Club. As a parishioner of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in McDonald, he was a Eucharistic minister and former member of the parish council. Along with his wife, he taught CCD classes for a number of years.

He was proprietor of Precast Specialties at Midway Block for 10 years.

Mr. McConaghy retired in 1994, after serving 36 years with United Airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport. He went on to serve in a consulting role and helped with construction development for Renda Broadcasting and its 27 radio stations throughout the country.

He was a co-founder and retired president of Aero Cartage Express, a Cleveland-based trucking company.

During the past three years, he volunteered in the demolition and reconstruction of the former Primrose School. Upon completion of the restoration, the facility will be turned into a historic landmark housing a museum.

Mr. McConaghy loved his Lord, his family, sports and his fellow man. He was generous with his time and money and tried to help those in need. He will be so greatly missed.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m Thursday and 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Thomas-Little Funeral Service Inc., 314 West Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, 724-926-2800. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, 219 West Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, PA 15057.
