William J. Poroda

William J. “Hatch” Poroda, 82, of Monongahela, passed into life eternal Monday, March 4, 2013, in UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, with his family by his side.
He was born January 29, 1931, in Monongahela, a son of the late William J. and Margaret Halaszynski Poroda.
Mr. Poroda was fondly known as “Hatch” by his brothers, family and his U.S. Steel co-workers, “Pap” by his grandchildren and “Pap Pierogi” by his great-grandsons.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Monongahela, where he served as trustee, elder and deacon.
Mr. Poroda had served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during the Korean War.
He retired from U.S. Steel, Clairton Works, as a sheet metal worker and was employed by Rolling Green Golf Course as a starter and ranger, at the time of his death.
Mr. Poroda enjoyed golf with the TGIF Golf League at Chippewa Golf Course and attending the Pitt Panther football games with nephew Denny Franks and brother John. He was an avid Steelers, Penguins and Pirates fan.
He volunteered his time with Meals-On-Wheels in Monongahela.
Surviving are daughters Judy Gerba and husband Coy of Monongahela and Barb Saxton and husband Kenny of Lebanon, Mo.; grandchildren Natalie Alvarez and husband Jeff and Brandon Gerba and fiance Tiffany Becinski; great-grandsons Zachary, Samuel and Nathaniel Alvarez; brother John Poroda and wife Sandy of Monongahela; sisters-in-law Sudella Poroda and Mary Lou Poroda, both of Monongahela, and June Butler and husband Gerry of Washington; very special uncle Melvin Fletcher of Greensburg; and several nieces, nephews and many other wonderful friends, including Janet Ratchford.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Betty Jayne Crow Poroda, with whom he celebrated 41 years of marriage; brothers Alex and Ed Poroda; and sisters Mary Franks, Eleanor Gatto and Teresa Poroda, who died in infancy.
Friends are invited to gather from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., the time of service, Friday, March 8, in First Presbyterian Church, 609 Chess Street, Monongahela, with the Rev. Sharon Woomer and the Rev. Mark Woomer, co-officiating. Interment will be private in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora. Frye Funeral Home Inc., Monongahela, is in charge of the arrangements.
