Thomas P. Arena Sr., 79, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born May 26, 1933, in Washington, a son of Patsy and Grace Murphy Arena.

Mr. Arena graduated from Washington High School in 1950 and attended Penn Commercial.

He was employed at Jessop Steel for 38 years as a carpenter, and he was a Club House teller at The Meadows for 40 years.

Mr. Arena served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956, having received the National Defense Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal and was stationed aboard the USS Amberjack submarine.

He enjoyed reading and listening to music.

Mr. Arena was a member of First Christian Church.

On September 25, 1954, in Winchester, Va., he married Jacquelyn L. Roux, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Leslie (Pete) Povich of Washington, Cathy (Johnny) Hoy of Virginia Beach, Va., and Amy (Mike) Ross of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Joseph (Margie) Arena and Patrick Arena, both of Washington; a sister, Nancy Razvoza of Port Charlotte, Fla.; six grandchildren, Nicole Jones, Christopher Pryor, Casey and Tyler Hoy and Jacob and Caitlin Ross; and two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Benjamin Jones.

Deceased is a son, Tommy Arena.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16. Bertha Bartkus, 92, of Cecil, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in McMurray Hills Manor, McMurray.

She was born December 19, 1920, in McDonald, a daughter of the late Leon and Emelina Bohey Berger.

Mrs. Bartkus was a member of St. Mary Parish.

She was a proud treasurer for many years for the Hilltopper, a member of RCA Retirement Club and Cecil No. 3 Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Bartkus enjoyed traveling, playing bingo and making music with her accordion. She last entertained at her 90th birthday party.

She was always helpful and loved by her family.

Mrs. Bartkus was a graduate of Cecil High School, Class of 1938.

She worked as a radio assembler for RCA in Meadow Lands.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Ventresca and Carol Mihalek, both of Cecil; a granddaughter, Mica (Chris) Minor; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Rethage (fiancé Jerry Carter) and Maci Minor, both of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, George Berger of Aliquippa.

Her dogs, Poncho and Brandy, will certainly miss their treats from Momma.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John T. Bartkus in 1985; sisters Angel Behling and Amelia Opferman; and a brother, Leon Berger.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road (Route 50) Cecil, where prayers of transfer will be said at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 15, followed by a Christian Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Cecil, at 10 a.m. with Father Stan Gregorek officiating. Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Peters Township.

Kathrine L. Bowman, 84, of West Finley, died at 10:42 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in her home, surrounded by her family, after being seriously ill for the past several years.

She was born June 14, 1928, in Majorsville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Fogle F. and Beula Bertha Mae Whiteman Milliken.

Mrs. Bowman resided in the West Finley area most of her life.

She was a member of First Christian Church in West Alexander and attended Cameron (W.Va.) High School.

Mrs. Bowman was a 20-year member of West Finley Volunteer Fire Company and was on the board of directors. She also was a member of the Ways and Means Committee, where she served as the cook.

She and her husband co-owned and operated the former Burnsville Store from 1975 until 1980.

Mrs. Bowman enjoyed puzzles, playing bingo, horse shoes, bowling and practicing reflexology.

On March 29, 1952, she married Furman Earl Bowman, who survives.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Martha L., wife of William Beverlin of Dallas, W.Va., and Cathy J., wife of Stephen Emery of West Finley; four grandchildren, Stephen, Robert and William Emery and Kathrine Bartsch; four great-grandchildren, Jo Jo and William Beverlin II and Robert and Alexis Emery; three sisters, Virginia Morgan and Ellen Leoni of Follansvee, W.Va., and May, wife of Ray Lohr of West Finley; and a brother, Glenn, husband of Joanne Milliken of Dallas.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are a sister, Irma J. Vorhes, and a brother, Robert Milliken.

George “Dewey” Bungard Jr., 80, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, South Strabane Township, following a lengthy illness.

Dale W. Carson, 50, of San Tan Valley, Ariz., died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in Mountain Vista Medical Center, Mesa, Ariz., of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He was born December 13, 1962, in Washington, a son of the late Roland W. “Bud” Carson and Mary Laverne “Vernie” Ashmore Carson of Claysville.

Mr. Carson was a 1980 graduate of McGuffey High School and a graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. He was an aircraft mechanic for US Airways at Sky Harbor Airport, located in Phoenix, Ariz., for 23 years.

He was a member of Taylorstown Presbyterian Church, Sons of Taylorstown American Legion Post 907 and was president of the Home Owners Association in his community.

Mr. Carson was a member of Grey Widows, with whom he made several cross-country motorcycle trips.

He enjoyed watching NHRA drag racing, John Force being his favorite, and also enjoyed his collection of Chevy cars and trucks and his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

On December 31, 1993, he married Carla L. Mach, who survives.

Also surviving are a sister, Kandice M. Harrison, a brother-in-law, Timothy E. Harrison, and two nephews, Deven A. and Cameron R. Harrison, all of Claysville.

Friends will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, in Taylorstown Presbyterian Church. A service will be held at 11 a.m. in the church with Pastor Patricia Lutz officiating. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Barbara Anne Coleman, 59, of Washington, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

She was born March 29, 1953, in New Eagle, a daughter of the late Charles R. and Dorothy Shook Walters.

She was a 1971 graduate of Monongahela High School. After high school, she attended Western Area Career and Technology Center in Houston, where she earned her certification as a licensed practical nurse.

For more than 10 years, she was employed by Tylerdale Family Medicine in Washington as a staff nurse.

She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed fishing and reading and was a lover of dogs.

Surviving are two daughters, Sequoia and husband Glenn Edwards III of Houston and Brianna Coleman, at home; four grandchildren, Cody and Jason Walters and Saniah and Xavier Edwards; a sister, Cathy and husband Richard Koontz of New Eagle; two brothers, Eric and wife Laurie Walters of Monongahela and Chris and wife Susy Walters of Conneautville; a sister-in-law, Lonna Walters of Carroll Township; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Shawn M. Walters, and a brother, Charles R. Walters Jr.

John Walter Glover, 96, of Holbrook, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in Consulate Skilled Nursing Facility of North Strabane Township.

He was born April 27, 1916, in Greene County, a son of John H. and Judith Murphy Glover.

Mr. Glover worked for Equitable Gas Co. compressing station in Rogersville from December 27, 1941, until his retirement, May 1, 1981. At the time of his retirement, his job title was crew leader.

His wife, Nellie Jane Santee Glover, whom he married March 27, 1937, in Cumberland, Md., is deceased.

Surviving are a son, Hugh Jackson (Sharon) Glover of Canonsburg; two daughters, Shirley Rose (Gene) Miller of Sycamore and Patricia Ann Glover of Bentleyville; four grandchildren, Cayci Louise Roland (Rob) Gorlitsky of Charleston, S.C., Christine (Michael) McCauley of New Freeport, Charles Roy Cramer Jr. of Foley, Mo., and Vicky Null of Kittanning; seven great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Deceased are sisters Mary Elizabeth Cummings, Ethel Flo “Toots” Bailey and Ellen Elizabeth Cumberledge; brothers James Delbert Glover and Harlis Earl Glover; a half sister, Opal Pearl Evans Jacobs; and a half brother, Ben Franklin Evans.

Josephine Shimko Kendralla, 85, of Greensboro, went to be with the Lord at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in Point Manor Personal Care Home, Point Marion.

She was born September 13, 1927, in Bobtown, a daughter of Joseph and Margaret Bertha Miller Shimko.

Mrs. Kendralla remained a lifelong resident of Greene County.

She graduated from Mapletown High School, Class of 1946, and was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church of Greensboro.

Mrs. Kendralla worked at Houze Glass Factory in Point Marion and eventually retired from Hills Department Store in Morgantown, W.Va., where she managed the toy department for 17 years.

On July 3, 1948, she married the love of her life, Edward Kendralla, and they began a life together on their beloved corner at Fieldsons Crossing. Sacrificially, they cleared the land, farmed livestock and built a home, known today as Circle-K-Ranch. She was a devoted wife and a devoted mother to her two sons, Edward (deceased in 1980) and Kevin and daughter Karen.

She enjoyed her time most when spending it with her family and working alongside them outdoors. A smile could always be seen as she rode alongside Ed in the John Deere Gator as they “toured the farm.” Only her four grandchildren and a great-grandchild could bring more joy to her eyes. She loved her family and will be lovingly missed.

In addition to her husband, a son and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret L. Gashie.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Kevin (Melissa) Kendralla of Gahanna, Ohio, and Karen (Randy) Welch of Kingwood, W.Va.; granddaughters Sheri (Mike) Guinn of Chesterfield, Mo., and Holly (Jordan) Brimm of Reedsville, W.Va.; grandsons Edward Kendralla of Phoenix, Ariz., and Michael Kendralla of Gahanna, and their mother, Roberta Kendralla of Gahanna; a great-grandchild, Alexis Welch of West Virginia; a brother, Joseph Shimko of New Port Richie, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Rose Kendralla of Greensboro; a brother-in-law, Frank Kendralla of Aliquippa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in Louis E. Rudolph Funeral Home, Thomas B. Paul B. Patterson Sr., 54, of Canonsburg, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013, in Canonsburg General Hospital.

He was born June 26, 1958, in Monongahela, a son of the late Homer Patterson and Marie Jemmerson.

In addition to his father, deceased are a daughter, Athena Marie Patterson Thompson; brothers Michael Patterson and Homer Patterson Jr.; and two grandchildren, Ethan and Ivan Thompson.

He leaves to celebrate his memory his wife, Marie McHugh of Canonsburg; sons William Chambers and Paul Brian Patterson Jr., both of Canonsburg; his mother, Marie Jemmerson (David) of Modesto, Calif.; sisters Carol Hosch (Johnny) of Virginia Beach, Va., Diane Carter (J.L) of Monongahela, Lynn Law of Norfolk, Va., and Cheryl Ellicott (Bruce) of Cincinnatti, Ohio; four grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Alcinda A. “Cinna” Johnson Polink, 86, Carmichaels, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born October 11, 1926, in Mt Pleasant, a daughter of the late George and Viola Stuck Johnson.

On November 14, 1948, she married Paul E. Polink, who survives. They had 64 beautiful years together.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kathy Kolar and husband Carl of Carmichaels and Sharon Samek and former husband Joseph A. Samek of Monument, Colo.; four grandchildren, Kelly Kolar, Amy Cook (Darren), Lindsay Kintz (Nick) and J. Andrew Samek Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Kintz and McKenna Liddick; a sister, Margaret Tillery of Panama City, Fla.; and a brother, Charles Johnson (Marlene) of Irons, Mich.

Deceased are five brothers, James D., Danny Dale, Donald L., George and Jerome Johnson; and two sisters, Barbara Boni and Betty McMann.

Mrs. Polink enjoyed cooking for her family, flower gardening, dancing and playing penny poker with her friends. She especially enjoyed a cruise with her husband, sponsored by Retired Teachers’ Association, and spending some winters in Las Vegas, Nev. She was dedicated to her family and neighborhood, and was always willing to provide her time and financial help to anyone in need.

John J. Storrick, 87, of Elkins, W.Va., formerly of Washington, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013.

Robert Leroy Yater, 68, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in his home, after being in declining health. 

He was born December 12, 1944, in Washington, a son of the late Clyde Sr. and Laura Zediker Yater.

Mr. Yater attended Trinity High School and worked as a driver for Waste Management for 30 years.

He enjoyed playing bingo and going to The Meadows. He was an avid Steelers fan.

Surviving are his companion, Emily Harris, three sons, Michael Richards Sr., Eric Richards and Robert Richards, and two daughters, Jodi Miller and Carla Richards, all of Washington; two brothers, Clyde Yater Jr. of Washington and Charles Yater of California; two sisters, Betty McClain and Sandy Brown, both of Washington; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a companion, Barbara Ann Casterline Richards; a son, Keith Richards; a brother, Jack Yater; and a sister, Laura Yater.
