George Bungard Jr.

George “Dewey” Bungard Jr., 80, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in Humbert Lane Health Care Centre, South Strabane Township, following a lengthy illness.

He was born August 17, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late George D. Bungard Sr. and Grace Hatfield Bungard.

Mr. Bungard was a 1950 graduate of Trinity High School and earned an associate’s degree in electrical engineering from Penn State-McKeesport.

He worked at McGraw-Edison in Canonsburg and was a self-employed farmer, raising Polled Herefords on his Canton Township farm for many years.

Mr. Bungard was a member of West Alexander Presbyterian Church, where he served as a trustee for several years, American Legion Glyde Post 0897 and United Steel Workers of America 04561.

He loved to travel. He went to Alaska during the 50th anniversary of the Alaska Highway, visiting with dear friends Marilyn and Dan.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army, earning a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged February 9, 1955, as a corporal.

On December 20, 1956, he married Mary Margaret Spragg, who survives.

Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth (Harry) Evans of Brownsville and Janet (Bert) Lederhaus of Bailey, Colorado.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Monday, March 18, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Keith Hornung officiating. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Memorial contributions may be made to West Alexander Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 303, West Alexander, PA 15376.
