Mary Peterson, 95, of Erie, died peacefully Monday, March 18, 2013, in St. Mary’s Home East.
She was born April 14, 1917, in Vestaburg, a daughter of the late Fred and Annie Zarrot Peterson. She was the only daughter in a family of seven brothers. She grew up and lived in Canonsburg, until her retirement.
Although she had only a sixth grade education, she eventually became a quality control inspector at U.S. Steel and retired in 1972.
Though she had many friends and loving relationships with her brothers, nieces and nephews, she remained unmarried, choosing to live with her mother, Annie, until her death in 1970.
Upon retirement in 1979, she moved to Phoenix, Ariz., to live near her brother, Gregory and his family. In 1990, she moved to Erie to be near her family and her church.
She was a devoted member of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity throughout her life. She had donated beautiful Russian icons to the church, which had been brought to this country by her father.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are seven brothers, Harry, Humphrey, Vern, John, Mitch, Gregory and Alfay Peterson.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity, 251 East Front Street, Erie, where services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20. Burial will be in St. John the Divine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church’s endowment fund. Arrangements are being handled by John J.
