James A. Riggen

James A. Riggen, 86, of Carmichaels, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 4, 2013, in the emergency room at Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

He was born December 21, 1926, in Greensboro, a son of the late John Winfield and Gladys Geneva Gallatin Riggen.

Mr. Riggen was a 1944 graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in Carmichaels since 1958.

He served as a radio operator with the U.S. Navy aboard submarines during World War II and worked as a sales representative for Simpson Towel Supply in Uniontown from 1948 until 1957. Afterward, Mr. Riggen worked as an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co. of America until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Riggen was a member of Cumberland American Legion Post 400, Carmichaels, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303, Greensboro, and enjoyed playing golf.

On August 7, 1948, he married Betty Jean LaRue, who died February 19, 2011.

Surviving are four sons, Michael K. Riggen and wife Marilyn of Carmichaels, Ralph R. Riggen of Palm Coast, Fla., Terry K. Riggen and wife Donna of Hollidaysburg and Joel A. Riggen, at home; four grandchildren, Kevin K., Ryan A., Sara Jean and Benjamin K. Riggen; a great-grandson, Tatum; four sisters, Eileen Haney of Boston, Mass., Monalee Swift of Uniontown, Nancy Jane Soom of Uniontown and Patricia Ann Markeweitz of Loraine, Ohio; two half brothers, William Harding of Rome, N.Y., and John Riggen of Fullerton, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a sister, Constance Hunter.

Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Yoskovich Funeral Home, 724-966-5500, Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8. Sister Marie Eileen (Cathy) Luxner will officiate.
