John Edwin Roney

John Edwin Roney, 84, of West Alexander, died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon, after being in failing health for the past two years.

He was born December 9, 1928, in Wheeling, W.Va., a son of the late Charles George and Rosa Margaret Dunlap Roney. He had resided in the Monroeville area most of his adult life prior to moving to West Alexander in 1992.

Mr. Roney was a former member of First Baptist Church in Monroeville, where he had served as a deacon and chairperson for the building and finance committee, and was a member of Claysville Christian Church at the time of his death.

He was a 1947 graduate of the former Claysville High School, a 1951 graduate of Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon University) and had taken graduate-level courses at the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Roney was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army.

He was a former employee of MSHA and Calgon Corp. in Coraopolis and was last employed as an instrumentation control engineer with J&L Steel Corp. (LTV Steel) in West Mifflin for 25 years prior to retiring in 1989.

Mr. Roney was a member of Washington County Historical Society and the Optical Society, where he held several instrumentation patents.

He enjoyed golf, bowling, bird-watching, local history and geneology.

On November 24, 1955, he married Margaret Lenora Algeo, who died August 30, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Charles, husband of Paula Roney of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert, husband of Margaret Roney of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Nancy, wife of Martin Pandolph of Bethel Park, and Janet Roney of Gaithersburg, Md.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are a brother, David Roney, and a sister, Dorothy Curtis.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until noon, the time of services, Monday, May 13, 2013, in Claysville Christian Church, with the Rev. Meade Lacock officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Claysville Christian Church.
