Michael V. Konyk

Michael V. Konyk, 91, of Canonsburg, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, in Broadmoor Senior Living, Bridgeville.

He was born June 14, 1921, in Colver, Cambria County, a son of the late Vincent and Anna Duzenik Konyk.

Mr. Konyk served as a private during World War II in U.S. Army’s Company C, 318th Infantry 80th division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of France, among others. Mr. Konyk’s bravery earned him the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars and silver star. This bravery also earned him a part-time job with Cecil Township as a police officer for 12 years and was inducted to Soldiers and Sailors Hall of Valor in Oakland in October 1997.

He also was an equipment operator for Mt. Lebanon Township for 13 years.

Mr. Konyk was Catholic. He lived in Canonsburg since 1953, where he was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 553 of Strabane and also of American Legion Post 902 of Houston, a life member of Canonsburg Sportsmen Club and Disabled Veterans of America and longtime member of Canonsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and American Legion Post 902 honor guard.

On July 12, 1986, he married his second wife, Helen M. Harps, who passed away September 16, 1996.

Surviving are two nephews, John “Jack” (Nikki) Konyk of Bethel Park and Jeffrey Konyk of South Park.

Deceased are his first wife, Evelyn Potter Konyk, who passed away May 5, 1985; a son, Michael V. Konyk Jr., who passed away November 5, 1987; a brother, John P. Konyk; and a sister, Mary Konyk.

Friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 20. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full military honors will be accorded by the combined honor guard of American Legion Post 902 and VFW Post 191. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Operation Comfort Warriors Fund via www.legion.org in memory of Mr. Konyk.
