Carl J. Hamstra, 89, of Eighty Four, formerly of Muskegon, Mich., died Wednesday, November 13, 2013.
He was born May 29, 1924, in Fremont, Mich., a son of the late Jacob and Johanna Clock Hamstra.
Mr. Hamstra was 1948 graduate of Cedar Lake Academy.
He retired in 1987 from Shaw-Walker Company after 37 years of service, where he worked as a punch press operator, a set-up man and later a fixture repairman.
Mr. Hamstra was a lifelong member of Fremont Seventh Day Adventist Church. Most recently, he attended Washington Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, photography, traveling, nature, camping and baseball, and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers.
His greatest passions were carpentry, construction and woodworking. He spent most of time working with his wood lathe. He enjoyed turning bowls and ink pens. Most of his joy was when he could share his projects as gifts with family and friends.
On August 13, 1950, he married Barbara Nina Whitney Hamstra, who died February 12, 2006.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas (Dulce) Hamstra of Portland, Ore., and Timothy (Cindy) Hamstra of Eighty Four; and two grandchildren, Tyler Hamstra of Bentleyville and Ashley Hamstra of Pittsburgh.
Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, is a brother, Clifford Hamstra.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, November 16, in Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Laurel Lake Camp and Retreat Center, 76 Lodge Road, Rossiter, PA 15772, or a charity of ones choice.
