Lemoyne Richard Hughes, 87, of Burgettstown, Hanover Township, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013, in Washington Hospital.
He was born on July 5, 1926, in New Freeport, a son of the late Alvie Richard and Olive Marie Wright Hughes.
A graduate of Weir High School, he worked as a construction foreman for Weirton Steel for 35 years.
Mr. Hughes served as an Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 1944, being honorably discharged in 1946. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct, Army Occupation, European African Middle Eastern Campaign and the World War II Victory Medals.
He was a lifetime member of Burgettstown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6955 and American Legion Post 1526.
Mr. Hughes enjoyed the outdoors, watching the Steelers and especially hunting and fishing.
Surviving are three sons, Richard Eugene Hughes and wife Roberta of Burgettstown, David Andrew Hughes and wife Luanne of Burgettstown and Mark Steven Hughes and wife Doreen of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; three daughters, Sandra Lee Macioce and husband Gary of DuBois, Lisa Kay Hughes of Castle Shannon and Lori Ann Gilbert and husband John of Burgettstown; a son-in-law, Mike Johnston of Washington; 14 grandchildren, Rick and Cherity Hughes, Jason and Andy Burt, Brandon Maltony, Lacey Simpson, Devon and Alexandra Hughes, Jack, Molly, and Katie Macioce, Megan Gilbert and Amanda and Scott Johnston; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Sophie Karp Hughes, who died April 15, 2000; a daughter, Donna Marie Johnston; and a brother, Vernon Hughes.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Lee and Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, with the Rev. Dr. Christina Hosler officiating. Internment will follow in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Burgettstown, where he was a member of the board of directors. Full military rites will be accorded.
