Army veteran, local farmer

Harold Bryan Jeffries, 89, of Waynesburg, formerly of Mt. Morris, died at 1:55 p.m. Thursday, November 28, 2013, in Respi Center West, Waynesburg.

He was born Tuesday, October 7, 1924, in Waynesburg, the first twin son of the late Thomas Henry Jeffries and Dessie May Mariner Jeffries.

Mr. Jeffries was a member of Rolling Meadows Church of God in Waynesburg.

He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted October 30, 1945 and was discharged March 31, 1947. He proudly served his country in Italy, where he earned the World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal and a lapel pin for no days lost. He served with the 788th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company, 88th Division.

Mr. Jeffries was a truck driver for the family coal business for several years and for Civilian Conservation Corp. at Swallow Falls, Md. He then worked for various coal mines in Washington and Greene counties. He was also a laborer with PennDOT for several years and was a local dairy and beef farmer.

In 1947, in Winchester, Va., he married Ruth Doris Brock Jeffries, who died in October 2001.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn J. (Richard) Brumley of Waynesburg and Dorie Jeffries Meighen of Waynesburg; a son, Louis H. (Sharon) Jeffries of Waynesburg; five grandchildren, Ronnie (Donna) Brumley, Frank (Shawnee) Brumley, Thomas Jeffries, Jennifer (John) Hardin and Christopher Meighen; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margretta Clark of Waynesburg; two brothers, Paul A. (Zelda) Jeffries; and Ralph (Diane) Jeffries, both of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two sisters, Evelyn Fagg and Jean Jeffries and three brothers, his twin Harlon Jeffries, Allen Jeffries and David Jeffries.

Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m., the time of service, Monday, December 2, in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, with Pastor Gregory Stauffer officiating. Private burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville.
