Retired welder was Navy veteran of WWII

James Rock, 87, of West Newton, died Wednesday, October 2, 2013, in Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg.

He was born January 16, 1926, in West Newton, a son of the late John and Mary Klein Rock.

Prior to retirement, he was employed as a welder by Fort Pitt Steel Casting and later worked at Filbern Manor in West Newton.

Mr. Rock was a member of the Slovenian Club in Herminie, where he enjoyed being with friends, polka dancing and playing the accordion.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Hague of Washington and Linda Morris and husband James of Irwin; four grandchildren, Tracey Strnisha, Robin McCarrell, James Kolenc and wife Angie and William Kolenc and wife Cara; nine great-grandchildren, Robert Krency, Nicholas and Kaylan McCarrell, Marco Montecalvo, Amanda Strnisha, Lucas James and Samuel Grant Kolenc and Kylie Jean and Zakary Alan Kolenc; a great-great-granddaughter, Brynn Marie Jean Strnisha; and a sister, Helen Bergman.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Jean Bulko Rock; five brothers; and two sisters.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in J. William McCauley Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 901 Vine Street, West Newton, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 5, with the Rev. John T. Sweeney officiating.
