Richey, Ruby Ruth Riggle, 94, of Wheeling, W.Va., formerly of Dallas, W.Va., and West Alexander, died October 1, 2013.
She was born May 5, 1919, on No. 2 Ridge, Dallas, a daughter of the late James D. and Minnie P. Scott Riggle.
Mrs. Richey was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a homemaker. She enjoyed baking, entered baked goods in the West Alexander Fair and enjoyed singing. She was a member of The Melodaires, which sang in various places in the 1970’s. She was an active member of her community most of her life. She held offices in several organizations, including Parent Teachers Association, band boosters, Dallas Senior Citizens, Sand Hill Homemakers and a member of West Finley Grange. She was involved in the Democratic Committee for several years and worked with elections and was a census enumerator in 1960 and 1970.
In 1982, she initiated contact with a newspaper in Dallas, Texas, asking for financial assistance for repairs to the community center in Dallas, W.Va. An article in the Texas newspaper resulted in donations, which were used to renovate the Dallas Community Center.
She was a member of Dallas United Methodist Church, West Alexander United Methodist Church and a charter member of Dallas Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for approximately 25 years, sang in choirs and served on several boards and committees of the churches. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Glenn Richey, on May 4, 1991, whom she married May 26, 1937.
The family appreciated many encouraging visits from Donnie Richey.
Surviving are three children, Raymond Glenn (Patty Allum) of Canton, Ohio, Marjorie Elizabeth Richey of Wheeling, W.Va., and James David Richey (Jeannie Rogers) of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Debra Grosschmidt (Andrew), Kevin Richey, Heather Stonecipher (Stephen), Heidi Duckwall (Michael), Holli Richey, J.D. Richey (Stephanie); nine great-grandchildren, Ryan Grosschmidt (Jena), Zachary Grosschmidt (Anna), Laurel Mishkin, Adam, Jack and Kyle Duckwall, Sarah Ann Stonecipher, Lucas and Sophie Richey; cousins; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11:30 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, October 5, in Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St., Elm Grove, Wheeling, W.Va., 304-242-2311, with Pastor Larry Lewis officiating. Interment will be in West Alexander Cemetery, West Alexander. Memorial contributions may be made to West Alexander United Methodist Church, Dallas United Methodist Church or Dallas Pike Baptist Church.
