U.S. Navy veteran, Behtlehem Mines retiree

Gabriel Bernadino “Dino” Brova, 91, of Scenery Hill, died Friday, October 4, 2013, in his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born February 22, 1922, in Claridge, a son of the late Frank and Catherine Suppo Brova.

Mr. Brova was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the USS Charles Sperry, a destroyer. His service also included serving in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. For his service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 14 Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Star and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1984, he retired from Bethlehem Mines Corp. Mine 60 after 45 years of service. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1197. In addition to coal mining, he owned and operated a farm, raising beef cattle for the majority of his life.

Time spent with his grandchildren and other family members, as well as farming, brought him special enjoyment.

Mr. Brova was a lifelong member of Sons of Italy in Cokeburg.

On July 1, 1948, in Winchester, Va., he married Catherine Yurkovich Brova, who died June 28, 2009.

Surviving are a son, George Brova (Paula) of Scenery Hill; a daughter, Linda Brova and companion Jeff Watson of Scenery Hill; three grandchildren, Nathan, Sara and Michael Brova; a sister, Margaret (Rita) Adamsky of Eatontown, N.J.; two brothers, Victor and Louis Brova, both of Scenery Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are three brothers, Joseph, Frank and Michael Brova.

Funeral services will be private and under the direction of John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or a charity of one’s choice.
