World War II veteran
Bruno Mancinelli, 90, of Victory Hill in Monongahela, died Saturday, October 5, 2013, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.
He was born July 15, 1923, in Monongah, W.Va., the son of Joseph and Mary Biordi Mancinelli.
Upon the death of his mother at an early age, Mr. Mancinelli lived with his uncle, John, and aunt, Mary Mancinelli, in Slovan.
At 17, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. in 1941 and went to Arizona until honorably discharged. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Mancinelli was stationed on the USS Griswold DE-7 during its entire commissioned time at war, where he served as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class. After the war, he returned to school and received his diploma from Monongahela High School in 1952.
He worked as a welder at the former Detroit Steel in Elizabeth until its closing. He then worked, until his retirement in 1988, in the maintenance department at Akzo Chemical, formerly Stauffer Chemical, in Monongahela.
He was a charter member of the Victory Hill Social Club and a member of the Carroll Township American Legion Post 949.
After his retirement, he spent time organizing the USS Griswold DE-7 shipmate reunions for 19 years. He was also involved with organizing the Memorial Day services at the Victory Hill Honor Roll. These activities were dear to his heart.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Jane Tomlinson Mancinelli, who he married June 27, 1947; a daughter, Mary E. Mancinelli of Victory Hill in Monongahela; and a son Charles L. Mancinelli (Frances Sines) of Brandonville, W.Va.; a brother, Spartico “Sparky” and Ida Mancinelli of Victory Hill in Monongahela; and a sister, Enis Lundy of Upper St. Clair; along with several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and the children of John and Mary Mancinelli, with whom he grew up.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, 724-258-6767, marshallmarrafuneralhome.com, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, with the Rev. Thomas Harding officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery, where the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad will conduct military honors.
