Purple Heart recipient enjoyed time with grandsons

Charles D. Rutan, 67, of Waynesburg, died Friday, October 4, 2013, at his daughter’s home with his family by his side.

He was born September 21, 1946, in Sycamore, a son of the late Ellsworth Rutan and Aldean Hopkins Rutan Sanders.

Mr. Rutan was a 1964 graduate of West Greene High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam, Germany, Alaska and Texas. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Rutan worked as a cook in the Waynesburg area and also as an orderly at the former Greene County Memorial Hospital.

He enjoyed going to his grandsons’ football games and spending time with them. He also enjoyed collecting movies and baseball cards and playing with his dog, Chewy.

In 1968, he married Esther Harris Rigby.

Surviving are a daughter, Erica Rutan of Waynesburg; brothers and sisters, Harry Paul Rutan and Ray Rutan, both of Graysville, Martha Rawson and Coral Hazel Rutan, both of Ohio, and Dorothy Orndoff, Judy Orndoff, Jack Rutan, Dale Gaskill and Jimmy Rutan, all of Waynesburg, Ethel Pauline Caldwell of North Carolina and Penny (Arthur) Wright of Waynesburg.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Dennis Rutan.

Services are private and under the direction of Behm Funeral Home, 182 West High Street, Waynesburg. A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.
