Avid golfer was Pirates fan

Gerold J. Havelka, 86, of Houston, went to be with his Lord Sunday, October 6, 2013 in his home.

He was born October 21, 1926, in Penowa, a son of Stanley and Elizabeth Pawlowski Havelka.

Mr. Havelka was a 1944 graduate of Cecil High School.

He worked for McGraw-Edison in Canonsburg from 1947 until he retired in 1988.

Mr. Havelka was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 in Houston.

Mr. Havelka was an avid golfer, Pittsburgh Pirates fan and had been a local area baseball player, having played on the Pennsylvania Transformer and the Houston Merchant teams.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Meadow Lands.

On October 25, 1947, he married Dorothy J. Borza, his wife of 66 years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four children, Jerry Havelka and Chris Havelka (Maggie) both of Houston, Cheryl Dick of Wellsburg, W.Va., and Kathy Puhr (Rich) of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Roene Severyn of Canonsburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, Stan, Ray, Regis and Al Havelka; and a grandson, John Mullins III.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Meadow Lands, with the Rev. Carmen D’Amico as celebrant. The family asks that everyone meet at the church. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township. Military rites will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902, Houston, combined honor guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Horizon Hospice, 2549 Mosside Boulevard, Monroeville, PA 15146, horizonhospice.org.
