Mary Lou Underkoffler
Affectionately known as “Punchy”
Mary Lou Underkoffler, 86, of Canonsburg, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2013, in Canonsburg General Hospital, following and extended illness.
She was born February 26, 1927, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late John M. and Pauline Gretz Klinger.
A 1944 graduate of Canonsburg High School, she lived her entire life in Canonsburg, where she was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church and Jefferson College Historical Society.
Mrs. Underkoffler was one of the first lifeguards at the Town Park swimming pool and had worked at Taylor’s Drug Store. She volunteered for many years as a Gray Lady at Canonsburg General Hospital and was a volunteer at the Greenery. She was heavily involved with the Alzheimer’s Research Group at UPMC in Pittsburgh. Prior to her retirement in February 1983, she was employed at the former RCA plant in Canonsburg and RCA and TacTec in Meadow Lands, where she served on numerous union committees.
She was active in Catholic Scouting as a den mother at St. Patrick Church, and was a member of both Washington Bottle Club and Duncan Miller Glass Club of Washington and RCA Retirement Club.
Mrs. Underkoffler was affectionately known as “Punchy.”
On July 8, 1944, in Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, she married Floyd A. Underkoffler, who passed away October 6, 1987.
Surviving are two sons, Floyd Theodore “Ted” Underkoffler (Carmella Farina) of Enfield, Conn., and Chad (Judith) Underkoffler of Washington; five grandchildren, Paul (Vanessa) Underkoffler, Christine Underkoffler, Jennifer (Geoff) Rouisse, Chad Underkoffler Jr. and Dana (Michael) Ledger; two stepgrandsons, Robert (Kimberly) Perez and Sean Perez; eight great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Emma, Bailey, Kyndall, Mason, Austin, Nicole and Lilly; and two nieces.
She was the last of her immediate family.
Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are a brother, Lt. Theodore Klinger, who died serving in World War II January 5, 1944; a grandson, Thomas Underkoffler; and a daughter-in-law, Linda May Underkoffler.
Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where departing prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Monday, October 21, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg.
