Merle L. Shaffer, 78, of Carmichaels, died at 11:05 p.m. Monday, October 28, 2013, in his home.

He was born October 19, 1935, in Jenners, Somerset County, a son of the late Lloyd David and Pearl E. Emmert Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer resided in Greene County most of his life and worked at U.S. Steel Corp. Robena Mine for 32 years, retiring May 20, 1997.

He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 4321, a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and a member of the Slavonic Club in Crucible.

On May 15, 1954, he married Pearl E. Clark, who died November 10, 2005.

Surviving are three sons, Merle E. Shaffer of Carmichaels, Lloyd R. Shaffer and his wife, Annetta, of Carmichaels and Ricky L. Shaffer and his wife, Joy, of Masontown; a daughter, Vicky L. Shaffer Novak and her husband, Jeff, of Greensboro; six grandchildren, David Matthew Shaffer, Brandi Lynn Shaffer Merritt, Lloyd Russell Shaffer III, Garrett Phillips, Kristi Shaffer Breakiron and Justin McCann; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald E. Shaffer of Carmichaels; four sisters, Janet Gnagy and her husband, Homer, Mary E. Shaffer Hoffman, Arlene DeArmitt and Nancy Shaffer Vanscoy, all of Somerset; a son-in-law, Dave Phillips of Mt. Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Darlene F. Shaffer Phillips, died in November 2009.

Family and friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m., the time of service, Friday, November 1, in Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street, Route 88, Carmichaels. The Rev. Harold O. Kelley will officiate.
