Herman N. “Bud” Junkins, 82, of Washington, died peacefully Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in his home surrounded by his loving daughter and son.

He was born October 5, 1930, a son of the late Herman E. and Catherine Stenger Junkins, formerly of Warwood, W.Va.

Mr. Junkins and his family moved to Washington when he was seven years old. He loved to swim and dive at Washington Park Pool as a young boy.

He took to playing football at a young age. He caught the eye of the track coach while he was in eighth grade and went on to win gold, silver and bronze medals in the PIAA state championships in 1949. He also was a four-year letterman in football and was All-Tri-county halfback during the 1948 and 1949 seasons. Mr. Junkins graduated from Washington High School in 1949.

He also loved playing softball and played semi-professional football for the Washington Generals for many years.

He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy and subsequently served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Mr. Junkins was a member of American Legion Post 175 in Washington, Elks 776, Pulaski Club, Polish Club and Slovak Club. He also enjoyed going to the old Arms Club.

He was an avid golfer, loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and adored the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a true Pirates fan throughout his life.

He had 35 years of service as a general foreman at McGraw Edison Power Systems, Canonsburg.

On June 20, 1951 he married Martha A. Chicone, who died June 26, 2007.

Surviving are a daughter, Becky L. Junkins of Acworth, Ga.; a son, Timothy J. Junkins of Washington; two grandchildren, Nicholas J. Junkins and Sydney M. Junkins of Morgantown, W.Va.; a brother, William Junkins of Avella; two goddaughters, Katherine Barton Porfeli and Caitlyn Louise Cossu; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, are two sisters, Mary Chunderlik and Elizabeth Rhoades; niece Debbie Storf; and nephew James Barton.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 1290 Jefferson Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, September 6, in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, Washington, with the Rev. Thomas D. O’Neil as celebrant. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.

A full military rite will be accorded by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Post 175.

The family suggests donations be made to St. Hilary Church or Washington Hospital Hospice.
