Joshua Adam Anderson, 39, of Washington, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 31, 2013.

He was born June 6, 1974, in Washington, a son of Vivian Dodd Anderson and the late Lester Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was a member of Living Stone Community Church, Washington.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are five children, Cody Anderson of Moon Township, McKenzie and Bailey Anderson of Canonsburg and Adam and Evan Anderson of Washington; a brother, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Anderson of Cokeburg; a sister, Hollie (Drew Rosco) Zavallo of Washington; maternal grandmother, Jean Dodd of Canonsburg; and several nephews.

Restored vintage cars, hot rods

George D. “Buddy” Scott Bates, 70, of Washington, died August 31, 2013, in Presbyterian SeniorCare.

He was born December 19, 1942, in Canonsburg, a son of the late George and Laura Anderson Bates.

Mr. Bates served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Following his tour of duty, he married his wife, Francis and they settled in Long Beach, Calif., where he worked many years restoring vintage cars and hot rods and as a driver for Senior Access. He returned to Washington in 2012, where he lived in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare.

He is survived by a sister, Amelia Jackson of Canonsburg; a brother William Bates of Mt. Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Friday, September 6, in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. Army veteran worked for LTF and Maverick Tube Corp.

Albert A. Darby of McMurray, went to his eternal home Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

He was the beloved husband of Diana S. Darby; loving father of Diane K. (Richard) Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and David A. (Carol) Darby of Upper St. Clair; dear brother of Julia Bucher of Denver, Colo.; special brother-in-law of Barbara (John) Hocker of Bethesda, Md.; cherished and devoted grandfather of Summer Smith, Kyle (Rachael) Smith, Justin (Becky) Darby, Derek Darby and Stephen Darby.

Mr. Darby was a graduate of Kansas State University.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years as an infantry officer during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Darby retired in 1995 after 40 years in the oil and gas industry, working for LTV Energy and Maverick Tube Corp.

Among his favorite pastimes were sports, volunteering, church activities and traveling.

He was an active member of The Bible Chapel in McMurray. He loved his Lord Jesus Christ, and knew he was only transient on this earth before going to spend eternity with his living Father and Savior.

Army veteran worked as a coal miner

Clarence R. “Killer” Gordon, 85, of Washington, died Tuesday, August 3, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

He was born July 4, 1928, in McConnells Mills, Chartiers Township, a son of the late Clarence R. Gordon Sr. and Alice Mull Gordon Thompson.

Mr. Gordon had worked as a coal miner and also worked for the former G.W. Peoples Railroad Construction Co. of Pittsburgh.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of IBPOE Lodge 6 of Washington.

Mr. Gordon loved his family and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren competing in sports. He also spent time at the casino, enjoyed gambling and shooting dice.

On November 20, 1952, he married Barbara Jean Patterson, who died May 13, 2005.

Surviving are seven children, Mary Porter (Lenny), Virginia McGlone, Letha Gordon (Gary Garrett), Bradford Gordon (Danielle), Clarence R. Gordon III (Brooke Taylor), Ruben Gordon (Betty) and Patricia Gordon, all of Washington; 22 grandchildren, James, Tiffanie, Justin, Ethan, Bradford Jr., Eden, Letha, Ruben Jr., Mya and Tajah Gordon, Richard and Wesley Lassic, Amber McGlone, Megan and Joseph Monroe, Thomas Jr. and Jaylin Kelly, Mina Haley, Kevin Heyman, DeQuay Isbell, Travis Crutcher and Austin Scott, all of Washington and Brandon of Florida; 23 great-grandchildren; a stepson, William Tyler of Washington; a sister, Sonya Bailey of Washington; a brother, John “Bake” Thomas of Washington; a special nephew, William Chandler of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, George Raymond Gordon and a grandson, James Edward Gordon.

Cared deeply for church and community

Stephanie Hasyn, 58, passed away unexpectedly in her bed in Moss Rehab, Philadelphia, Saturday, August 31, 2013, after suffering from a severe stroke, due to an arteriovenous malformation in May. Since her stroke, She had been recovering at a rather miraculous rate and because she was medically stable, her passing came as a surprise to everyone who had faith in her.

She was born Sunday, December 5, 1954, in Washington, where she graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and resided there for most of her early life. She is a daughter of the late Peter and Rose Leone Ferralli.

Also surviving are her loving husband John; a son, Paul; a daughter, Christye; three brothers, Pete, Sam and Steve, her twin; and their respective families.

Having received a bachelor of science in biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a certificate in medical technology from Washington Hospital and an masters in business administration in computer science from Temple University, she placed a tremendous emphasis on continuing her education, and was enrolled as a student in Montgomery County Community College, where she had taken several computer science and music classes over the past two years.

In 1979, she came to the Philadelphia area where she worked at Temple University Hospital and later as a medical technologist at Smith-Kline. After several years of working as a medical technologist, she began work as a data base administrator, but left Smi-Kline soon after to raise her children. She was a wonderful mother, wife and friend, who enjoyed spending time with those she loved. Most recently she had been employed by North Penn School District.

Mrs. Hasyn also cared deeply for her church and community. Among other things, she was a religious education teacher in Presentation of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church. She belonged to Italian Sons and Daughters of America and Lansdale chapter of the AAUW, a volunteer for the auxiliary of the VMSC of Lansdale and Pennsylvania Medical Reserve Corp., coordinator of the community built Park Sci Playground in Upper Gwynedd, volunteered in a number of programs through the North Penn School District, served as a coach and team manager for Nor Gwyn baseball and involved with numerous soccer organizations as a soccer coach and team manager. Some of her hobbies included being an avid reader, the outdoors, cooking, caring for her two cats, traveling and most importantly, spending time with her family and friends.

She loved nature and just being outside. She was very interested in learning as much as she could about plants and animals and sharing her discoveries with whoever would listen. Whenever she and her family traveled, she always enjoyed her time spent experiencing nature from National Parks to National Forests across the United States. She coordinated the Karen Wildey Indoor Memorial Soccer Tournament for the past six years held in Montgomery County Community College. The annual soccer tournament raises funds for anti-DUI and anti-texting while driving educational awareness programs for students in school districts of Montgomery County and Bucks County.

Dairy farmer was member of Center Presbyterian Church

Robert A. Kelso, 91, of Washington, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in his home.

He was born June 7, 1922, in Allegheny County, a son of the late George M. and Bessie M. Doughty Kelso, Sr.

Mr. Kelso was a 1941 graduate of North Fayette High School and attended two years at Clarion College.

He worked as a dairy farmer until his retirement in 2006. He began on the Kelso dairy farm in North Fayette Township and following World War II, bought a farm in Mt. Pleasant Township.

Mr. Kelso was a member and past elder of Center Presbyterian Church, Midway, a member of Miller’s Run Grange and a member of Raccoon Cemetery Board.

On April 25, 1953, he married Marjorie W. Cleek, who survives.

Surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two brothers, Mark M. and Donald M. Kelso; and two sisters, Sara F. Plance and Betty F. Scott.

St. Oliver Plunkett Parish member loved classical music

Helen Macina Machinak, 94, of Waynesburg, formerly of Fredericktown, died Monday, September 2, 2013, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born December 29, 1918, in Leechburg, a daughter of the late Adam and Anna Krisovsky Kristopovich.

Mrs. Machinak was a lifetime member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown.

She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed storytelling, cooking, gardening, reading, science and nature. She loved music, particularly classical music, and was especially interested in nutrition and environmental issues. She lived a green lifestyle before it was fashionable.

Her husband, John Machinak, died in 1996.

Surviving are five children, David Machinak (Evelyn) of Clarksville, Donna Morosky (Kenneth) of Waynesburg, Elaine Posten of Waynesburg, Christopher Machinak of Fredericktown and Dolly Long (David) of Shrewsbury, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Darla Marie Mylan, Dawn Renee Murray, Stefanie Morosky Kelly, Michelle Ward, John Morosky, James Morosky, Heather Posten, John Posten, Sarah Machinak and Charles Long; four great-grandchildren, Aaron and Molly Mylan, Zachary and Emma Ward; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a son, James Machinak; a granddaughter, Rachel Machinak; six sisters, Stella Armstrong, Verna Passarella, Betty Thornberry, Mary Lawrence, Ann Mickolajczyk and Sophie Packrall; and a brother, Edward Kristy.

Mrs. Machinak was the last of her immediate family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday September 5, in St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Paul Gruenbach as celebrant. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. Enjoyed playing bingo and cards

Anna Cettin Novak, 96, of Bobtown, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in her home.

She was born April 16, 1917, in Omaha, Neb., a daughter of the late Martin and Anna Cizel Cettin.

In addition to her parents, deceased are her husband, Andrew “Judge” Novak in 1977, and three brothers, Rudy, Edward and Frank Cettin.

Mrs. Novak had worked for the Company Store in Bobtown and Houze Glass Factory in Point Marion for 30 years.

She was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church of Bobtown, former member of its Rosary Altar Society, Shannopin Civic Club and Bobtown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are two sons, William Novak and wife Myrna of Carmichaels and Richard Novak and wife Patty of Hickory; nine grandchildren, Carolyn Whollery and husband Dave, Sue Faieta and husband Scott, Richard Novak and wife Jennifer, Cindy Spencer and husband Ken, Dennise Kimberling and husband Kevin, Dave Novak and wife Patty, Leah Daniel and husband Frank, Deborah Dugan and husband Chris and Doug Novak; three stepgrandchildren, Kelly Sabol and husband Leonard, Chris Sabol and Cindy Demniak and husband Dave; 18 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; brother John Cettin; three sisters-in-law, Mary Brown and husband Harry, Amelia Novak and Alice Novak; a special friend, Shaun Pegg; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Novak enjoyed playing bingo, cards, going to the casinos and making quilts.

Mrs. Novak was cared for by Dr. Allen Hess and Amedisys Hospice.

Bull International tractor, farm equipment mechanic

John David Pacyna, 62, of Hickory, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in Washington Hospital. He had been in declining health.

He was born June 15, 1951, in Washington, a son of Louise Gross Charles Miller of Hickory and the late Henry Francis Pacyna.

Mr. Pacyna was Catholic.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Pacyna was an employee of Bull International, where he had worked as a tractor and farm equipment mechanic for 38 years.

He enjoyed NASCAR, fishing and he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

On July 20, 1974, he married Sandra Jean Wilkerson, who survives.

Also surviving, in addition to his wife, mother and stepfather, are a daughter, Danielle (Clinton) Wallack of Wellsburg, W.Va.; a stepbrother, Thomas Edward (Dana) Miller of Washington; and three grandchildren, Madison Roble and Shelby and Autumn Wallack.

Deceased, in addition to his father, are a son, Michael J. Pacyna; and two brothers, Henry F. Pacyna Jr. and Dennis J. Pacyna.

Former Washington School Board member

Alvin W. Spence, a lifelong resident of Washington, passed away peacefully September 4, 2013.

He was born, the youngest of four sons, to Joseph Clark Spence and Nelle Ewing Spence on April 15, 1929.

Mr. Spence was a 1948 graduate of Trinity High School.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Spence embarked on a 38-year career for Bell of Pennsylvania/Verizon, retiring in 1991. 

He was the devoted husband of Elizabeth Smith Spence, whom he married April 16, 1953. They shared a loving marriage for 58 years until her death March 12, 2010. 

Mr. Spence was a member of Allison Avenue Abundant Life Baptist Church for over 60 years, serving in many roles including church moderator and deacon.

He was a 24-year member of Washington School Board, serving 20 years as president. He was also a member of Washington Masonic Sunset Lodge 623 American Legion. 

Surviving are two sons, Wayne (Beth Posa) of Gibsonia and David (Barbara King) of Kennett Square; four grandchildren, Brian (Diana Hagan), David P., David J and Kathryn; two great-grandchildren, Max and Lyla; a brother, Joseph Spence; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, James and Ray Spence.

Robert Wolanski Sr., 72, of Burgettstown, Hanover Township, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in his home.

Known by family as sweet, loving, trusting

Eva Marjorie Zorich, 84, of Waynesburg, Morgan Township and formerly of Carnegie, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born December 3, 1928, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Wilbur L. and Opal Taylor Knight.

Mrs. Zorich was a graduate of Jefferson High School, where she was active in softball boosters while her children were attending. She enjoyed growing orchids, flower gardening, cross-stitching, crocheting, watching cooking shows and the company of her cat, Tweets. Mrs. Zorich was known by her family to be a sweet, loving and trusting person.

On October 14, 1951, she married Eli Mike Zorich, who died September 24, 2009.

Surviving are a son, Eli M. Zorich and his wife Beverly, of Oakdale; a daughter, Eva M. Zorich and her partner, Deborah Monnich of Jefferson; two grandchildren, Christopher Zorich and his wife Katy of Mt. Lebanon and Jordan Hess of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two sons, Edward M. Zorich and Eric M. Zorich.
