Avid volunteer was proud of her grandchildren
Bertha Jeanne Fleming Thomas, 83, of Charleroi, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born March 29, 1930, in Charleroi, a daughter of the late Dave and Velma Jones Fleming.
Mrs. Thomas was married to William Thomas, former Charleroi police chief, on December 28, 1965, who passed away March 5, 1977.
She graduated from Charleroi High School in 1948
Mrs. Thomas worked her entire life for Bell Telephone and AT&T as an operator in traffic, in the business offices and finally as a sales representative.
In retirement, she successfully operated an eBay business until the time of her death.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Charleroi, the Pioneer Club of AT&T and a driver for the Charleroi Meals on Wheels program for over 12 yrs. “Gramster,” as she would come to be known, volunteered countless hours assisting the many organizations her grandchildren participated in. Over the years, thousands of pepperoni rolls would be made for numerous team events.
She was an avid fan of Charleroi and Bentworth athletics and attended all of her grandchildren’s many sporting and social events.
She truly loved her Charleroi Legion Baseball and rooting for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Surviving are a son, David Kurowsky (Joy) of Charleroi; a daughter, Carleen Jones (Barry) of Ellsworth; and the pride of her life, her grandchildren, Matt Kurowsky (Brittany), Jeff Jones, Rachel Jones Behanna (Justin) and Brad Kurowsky; and great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Elijah and Landon Kurowsky. Also surviving are her much loved Fort Lauderdale family, her brother, Fred Fleming and her nieces and nephew, Laurie Rowley, Carrie Cromartie and Scott Fleming.
She will also be greatly missed by her loving yellow Lab, Chloe.
By request of the deceased, a public viewing will not occur. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 7, in Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Donny Stevens Kidney Fund, a close friend of her grandson, at PleaseHelpDonny.com.
