WWII veteran enjoyed gardening
Raymond Haley Chambers, 87, of Canonsburg, died Thursday, September 5, 2013, in Consulate Retirement Village.
He was born July 8, 1926, in Canonsburg, a son of the late John and Jessie Haley Chambers.
Mr. Chambers was a member of Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, Canonsburg, where he was a trustee and an usher.
He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Chambers was a very active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as a past Quarter Master of the state of Delaware. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Chambers enjoyed gardening and flowers.
On April 7, 1951, he married his wife of 62 years, Patricia Morgan, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a machine operator and for the DuPont factory for 41 years.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Walter Chambers and wife Catherine of Uniontown, Ohio, John Chambers and wife Christine of North Strabane and William Chambers of Middletown, Md.; daughter-in-law, Anne Chambers; seven grandchildren, Bethany, Devon, Joshua, Emily, Caitlyn, Erin and Abbey Chambers; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, deceased are a son, Timothy Chambers; five brothers, Carl, Charles, Lowell, Claude and John Rudolph Chambers; and six sisters, Joyce Sommers, Mary Sanders, Ora Polansky, Ada Briar, Clara Gilmore and Lillian Martin.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director. Friends and family will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, September 9, in Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, Canonsburg, where services will be held with the Rev. Dr. Donald C. Austin officiating. Interment will follow in Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by VFW post 191 and the American Legion post 902.
