WWII veteran enjoyed traveling
Moynelle V. Kern, 93, of Avella, died at 7:38 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.
She was born June 27, 1920, in Cross Creek Township, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Moynelle Mathilda Fehl Hollaway.
Mrs. Kern served in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps during World War II.
She was a lifelong resident of Avella, where she was a member of Bert C. Siders American Legion Post 643.
Mrs. Kern enjoyed traveling and visiting her family.
On April 23, 1953, she married Leroy Kern, who died June 17, 1991.
Surviving are five daughters, Hazel Ann Fennych of St. Petersburg, Fla., Karen Ann (Raymond) Lowrey of New Carlisle, Ohio, Patty (Ronald) Laughlin of Beulah, Colo., Carol (William) Strough of Washington and Pauline Ammerman of Buffalo, N.Y.; two sons, Leroy (Mary) Kern of Fredericksburg, Va., and Thomas E. (Nancy) Kern of Avella; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ruth (Durwood) Murray of Matthew, N.C., Bertha Thellman of Warren, Ohio, Emilie J. (James) Holler of Fairfield, Catherine (William) Griffith of Avella and Sandra (Kenneth) Cauvet of Canton, Mich.; and a brother, William L. Hollaway of Hopedale, Ohio.
Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are a son, John Dean Kern; three brothers, Andrew, Homer and Henry Hollaway; and two sisters, Hazel Ann Hollaway and Mildred Piatt.
Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, with the Rev. Gary Gibson officiating. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery, Avella. Full military rites will be accorded graveside by Bert C. Siders American Legion Post 643.
