1964 Waynesburg H.S. grad was Navy veteran

Joel E. Guthrie, 66, of South Whitehall Township, died Saturday, September 14, 2013, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

He was the husband of Kathleen S. Stoy Guthrie, to whom he was married for more than 44 years.

Mr. Guthrie was born in Waynesburg, a son of the late Kenneth J. and Wilma S. Spitznogle Guthrie.

In 1964, he graduated from Waynesburg High School and attended two years at Waynesburg College.

He was an independent NDE/NDT inspector.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served on the USS Canopus and spent 18 months overseas during his three-year enlistment.

In Allentown, he was a 32nd-Degree Mason with the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory and also of Waynesburg Lodge 153. He was also a member of the Ferrari Club of America.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Stephanie S., wife of Jason Hammer of Slatington; a brother, Stephen D., husband of Song Sun of Apex, N.C.; and a grandson, Cade Conall.

As per his wishes, there will be no memorial service. Arrangments are being handled by Trexler Funeral Home Inc., Allentown, www.trexlerfuneralhome.com.
