Althea Levina Vance Sands

Althea Levina Vance Sands, 89, of Waynesburg, formerly of Jefferson, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.
She was born in 1924 in Washington, a daughter of the late Clarence “Red” and Dora Campbell Vance.
Mrs. Sands was a 1943 graduate of Cumberland Township High School.
In 1944, she married the late William Howard Sands, who had been a prisoner of war. They were married for 63 years and resided in Jefferson.
Surviving are two children, Jeffrey Lynn Sands (Deborah) and Althea L. Sands Barcome; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a step great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are two children, Kenneth Robert Sands and Kathleen Joyce Sands, who died at age five; two brothers, Clarence “Milton” Vance and Harry Vance; and a sister, Elvira Zink.
She loved music, and played the guitar and clarinet in her youth.
Mrs. Sands loved Jesus and was a longtime member of Jefferson Church of the Nazarene, where she treasurer for 14 years. She was also affiliated with the East View Assembly of God Church.
She was devoted to her family and hospitable to all who visited her home. She was a caregiver to her young daughter, husband, brother, mother and others who came into her home.
Mrs. Sands resided the last four years of her life with her daughter, Althea, prior to going to Rolling Meadows.
Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, September 21, in Lesako Funeral Home Inc., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels, PA 15320, 724-966-5100, Paul M.
