Served as aviator in Army

Capt. Bradly Alan Nicka, 29, of Arizona, formerly of Burgettstown, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013, in the University of Arizona Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz.

He was born May 8, 1984, in Painesville, Ohio, a son of Peter R. and Julie Cornell Nicka of Burgettstown.

Deceased are paternal grandfather Ernest Nicka Jr. and maternal grandmother June Cornell.

After his 2002 graduation from Weirton Madonna High School, he graduated from West Point in 2006, with his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and received his masters degree in business administration from Webster University in 2012.

Capt. Nicka was a member of the 160th Division of the Special Operations Aviation and just finished his second tour in Afghanistan. A Bronze Star recipient, he served as an aviator in the U.S. Army, where he received Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Army Aviator Badge, Combat Action Badge and the Army Parachutist Badge.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Anna Velto Nicka of Arizona, whom he married in 2007; daughter Addison Leigh Nicka; sisters Caitlin Marie Nicka of Hershey and Jennifer Elizabeth Nicka of Ft. Collins, Colo.; paternal grandmother Maureen Nicka of Geneva, Ohio; and maternal grandfather Lee Cornell of Madison, Ohio.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, W.Va. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 28, in St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, 229 California Avenue, Weirton, with the Rev. Father Manuel Gelido officiating. The Ft. Knox Military Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at the church immediately following the funeral.
