Essie Wilnetta “Pat” Mitchell, 89, passed away peacefully February 4, 2014, in the home she made with her daughter, with her family present, and with excellent supportive care of the staff of Hospice Care of Washington Health System.
She was born January 26, 1925, in Washington, a daughter of Charles and Elsie Brooks.
Mrs. Mitchell attended Mt. Morris High School and was a member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church.
On May 3, 1947, she married Charles R. Mitchell, who passed away September 13, 1992.
Family and friends brought many times of joy to Mrs. Mitchell’s life. She attended her grandson Wesley’s reception of the Commanding General’s Award from Army basic training, attended her granddaughter Jessica’s graduation with honors from Shadyside School of Nursing and attended the wedding of her grandson Patrick to Becca, the love of his life.
The gift of hospitality was evident in all aspects of Mrs. Mitchell’s life as she cooked to feed her family, always found enough beds for visiting guests and provided seed for feathered friends. Always thinking of others first, she continued to inquire about friend’s and neighbor’s families, even as health failed her.
Limited mobility in recent years of life allowed time for a close relationship with “Mrs. Mitchell’s” friend and caregiver, Mary Jo and “care-giving supervisor,” WieSue, a pug.
Surviving are her daughter Judith of Washington; son Dennis (Patty) of Canonsburg; granddaughter Jessica of Pittsburgh; grandson Wesley of Portland, Maine; grandson,Patrick (Becca) of Latrobe; and great-grandson Liam of Latrobe.
Friends and family will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 8. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Washington Health System, Washington Hospital Foundation, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301. Additional information and guest book are available at www.NealFuneralHome.com.
