Retired U.S. Army master sergeant

Gary L. “Henry” Phillips, 68, of Rices Landing, died at 3:55 a.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, in his home, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Thursday, April 5, 1945, in Carmichaels, a son of the late Vernon S. Phillips and June I. Pratt Phillips.

Mr. Phillips retired after 30 years with the U.S. Army as a master sergeant, having served during the Vietnam War and Desert Storm.

He was a member of Cumberland Township American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, both of Carmichaels. He also was a member of Rices Landing Boat Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Phillips was an avid NASCAR fan having worked in the pits. He would grill for Bill Elliott when he came to the Michigan International Speedway. He also had worked for GTE, which is now Verizon as an installer retiring after 30 years.

On February 18, 1999, he married Debra Smith, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Melissa Johnson of Toledo, Ohio, and Christy (Vinny) Snyder of Jerry City, Ohio; a son, Vernon S. (Jennifer) Phillips of Holland, Ohio; five grandchildren; a sister, Linda Diane (Ralph) Nicholson of Bethel Park; five brothers, Richard O. (Emma Faye) Phillips of Garrettsville, Ohio, Robert H.(Bonnie) Phillips of Carmichaels, David R. (Diane) Phillips of Millsboro, Del., George E. Phillips of Carmichaels and Timothy P. (Pam) Phillips of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was special friends with the nurses at Amedisys Hospice, who took care of him for almost two years.

Deceased is a brother, Vernon Randal Phillips.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 12, with Pastor Reagan Fike officiating. Burial will be in Claughton Cemetery, Whiteley Township, Greene County. Graveside military honors will be accorded by Cumberland Township American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and representatives of the U.S. Army.Information is available at www.milliken-throckmortonfh.com.
