William E. Farner
Charleroi community leader
William E. Farner, 86, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
He was born November 2, 1927, in Cross Creek, a son of the late Edward and Florence McLain Farner.
He was a graduate of Hickory High School. He attended Virginia Military Institute and was a graduate of Wisconsin School of Banking. Mr. Farner was manager and assistant vice president of Mellon Bank in Charleroi and Washington. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Cross Creek Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Farner was active in the Charleroi community. He was honored by the Charleroi Chamber of Commerce with the Congressional Award for community service. He was past president of Charleroi Lions Club, Charleroi Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of Greater Charleroi Industrial Development Corp., secretary of Charleroi School Authority and served on the boards of Monongahela Valley Hospital, United Way and Washington County Economy Leagues. He was a member and treasurer of Nemacolin Country Club.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Donati Farner; sons Chris (Linda) of Speers and Eric (Jan) of Fallowfield Township; grandsons Evan, Brandon and Joshua (Alyssa); granddaughters Jade and Chelesa; great-granddaughter Brenley; and daughter-in-law Beverly Farner of South Park.
He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Leo.
Deceased are his son, Brad; his sister, Edna; and his brother, Glenn.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 226 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 15. Interment will be in Monongahela Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Speers United Methodist Church in memory of William Farner.
