Herbert Lynn “Pone” Hamilton, 69, of Rogersville, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, following a short but courageous battle with cancer.
He was born July 27, 1944, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Arnie “Pone” Wayne and Prudence Inez Berry Hamilton, and had resided in the Nineveh and Rogersville areas for most of his life.
Mr. Hamilton was a member and trustee of Fork Ridge Baptist Church, Cameron, W.Va. He was a 1963 graduate of West Greene Middle-Senior High School, where he became the first wrestler to earn a section wrestling title the same year.
Mr. Hamilton worked for Dunmar Oil and Gas as a laborer until 1964, when he worked as a laborer for National Transit Oil Co. In 1966, he worked for Equitable Gas, prior to 1981, when he worked as a corrosion technician for Equitrans LP. Following that, he was a welding and corrosion inspector for 13 years with Gulf Interstate and McDaniel’s Technical Services Inc., prior to retiring from Elk Industries in November 2013.
He was a member of Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 F&AM and Lodge of Perfection, Uniontown.
Mr. Hamilton and his wife made their home available for many foster children for the past 47 years. He enjoyed coaching youth wrestling and baseball, hunting, fishing and camping in his camper.
On August 3, 1963, he married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Jean Adams, who survives.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Jeffrey Lynn, husband of Rhonda Hamilton of Sycamore, and Anthony B. “Albert,” husband of Heather Hamilton of Elkins, W.Va.; a daughter, Amy Christine, wife of Guy R. Hostutler of New Freeport; four grandchildren, Hunter, Hayden, Aaron and Olivia Hamilton; two brothers, Carl C. Hamilton of Washington and L. Sheryl, husband of Linda Hamilton of Graysville; and a sister, Alberta, wife of Keith Wise of Graysville.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Donald W. and Kenneth M. Hamilton; and three sisters, Lena Chenney, Evelyn Price and Garnet Smouse.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 17, with the Rev. Bruce Judy officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 F&AM will have a service at 6 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
