Devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend
Helen L. Hickman Cox, 82, of Jefferson, died at 1:48 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2014, while at the home of Jackie and Robert Tedrow, her beloved niece and nephew, surrrounded by her loving and devoted family.
She was born Wednesday, January 13, 1932, in Shirley, W.Va., a daughter of the late Harley Hickman and Mildred Madaline Wright Hickman.
Mrs. Cox resided in the Waynesburg area most of her life, until she moved to Jefferson in 1992.
She was a member and elder of West Union Presbyterian Church in Sycamore. Because of her loving relationship with Jesus Christ, she found strength through life’s adversities.
Mrs. Cox retired from Greene County Memorial Hospital after several years of working in the dietary department.
She enjoyed camping, crossword puzzles, vacationing in Florida and family get-togethers. She was at her happiest when camping with her family. She followed the lives of her grandsons, whom she adored. In addition, she took great pride in her home.
On May 31, 1954, she married her husband, Stanley Cox, who died January 6, 2006. Together, they enjoyed horse shows, farming, vacationing, going to church and especially camping. She could always be found sitting with family around a warm campfire, sharing familar stories.
Left to honor her memory are a son, Gary Allen Cox, husband of Tamara Lynn Cox, of Waynesburg; two grandsons, Ryan Puthuff of Waynesburg and Harley Shane Cox of Largo, Fla.; three sisters, Beverly Cross of Waynesburg, Dorothy Kelley of Carmichaels and Carolyn Ross of Waynesburg; three brothers, James Edward Hickman, Leroy “Buck” (Lucetta) Hickman and David L. Hickman, all of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews, who lovingly referred to her as “Aunt Heldoo.”
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a son, George Edward Cox, and three brothers, Billie Joe Hickman, who died at birth, William (Diddle) Hickman and Darrell (Joe) Hickman.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, with Commissioned Ruling Elder Nellie Baker officiating. Burial will be in Oakmont Cemetery, Waynesburg.
