Washington graduate played with Stan Musial
Bert Hill Miles, 94, of Bridgeton, N.J., died Thursday morning, February 20, 2014, in his home under the care of hospice and his family.
He was the husband of Jeanne L. Wilmont Miles, who died in 1999.
Born in Erie and a graduate of Washington High School, Mr. Miles had been a resident of Bridgeton since 1966.
He was a decorated member of the U.S. Army, having seen active combat in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
An All-America baseball player in high school, he was proud to have played with Stan Musial.
Surviving are three daughters, Valerie DeMarco (Anthony) of Rosenhayn, N.J., Deidre Hoffman of Bluemont, Va., and Shelley Miles of Bridgeton; a son, Kyle D. Miles (Tinna) of Sacramento, Calif.; a son-in-law, Edward Simmers of Winchester, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Allyson Simmer; a son-in-law, Ronald Hoffman; four sisters, Helen, Dorothy, Ruth and his twin sister, Myrtle; and eight brothers, Charles, Earl, John, Leslie, William, George, Robert and Harry. Mr. Miles was proud that eight of his nine brothers had served their country in the U.S. military.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m., the hour of service, Thursday, February 27, in Freitag Funeral Home, 137 West Commerce Street, Bridgeton, with the Rev. Joe McKnulty of Bridgeton Church of the Nazarene officiating.
Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery, Bridgeton.
