Consol coal miner for 43 years

Joseph F. Mrenak, 81, of Eighty Four, died Thursday, February 20, 2014, in Forbes Hospice, Pittsburgh.

He was born November 11, 1932, a son of the late Frank and Marie Vehouc Mrenak.

Mr. Mrenak worked for 43 years as an underground coal miner, retiring in 1991 from Consol Energy’s Bailey Mine. His employment included numerous area coal mines, all owned by Consol. For more than 10 years, after his retirement, he worked as a maintenance man at Carlton Motel.

He was a member and former deacon of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Eighty Four.

Mr. Mrenak enjoyed gardening, auctions and flea markets and was always tinkering with various projects.

On September 28, 1991, he married Elizabeth Davis, who survives.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three children, Ronnie Mrenak (JoAnn) and Daren Mrenak (Maryann) of Washington and Denise Spragg (Kenny) of Southview; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

His first wife, Rose, died in 1989.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, with Pastor Tom Bellhy officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mrenak Family, in care of Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville, PA 15314.
