Basketball and baseball coach

Brian Anselmino, 45, of Canonsburg, died unexpectedly Saturday, February 22, 2014. He was a loving and devoted father and husband, as well as a great friend to many and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him, especially his family.

Mr. Anselmino was born July 31, 1968, in Pittsburgh, and is survived by his parents, Lawrence and Mary Ann Kruki Anselmino. He was a 1986 graduate of Ringgold High School. He was a member of the Duquesne Dukes basketball team from 1986 to 1990, graduated from Duquesne University in 1990 and was still active with the basketball program as an alumni.

Mr. Anselmino worked in medical sales as a territory manager from Thoratec.

He was very active with coaching youth basketball and baseball. He was an assistant coach for the Canon-McMillan High School boys varsity program, and then coached his son’s travel basketball team for the Canon-Mac youth basketball program. He also has coached his kids in AAU basketball for the Western Pennsylvania Wildcats. He also coached baseball and assisted with his son’s baseball teams in Canon-Mac Youth Baseball Association.

He was an active member of St. Patrick Church in Canonsburg.

Deceased is a young daughter, Amanda Anselmino, who passed away on the same day in 2006.

Surviving are his wife, Denise Wright Anselmino, and his twin children, Danielle and Anthony Anselmino.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in Sollon Funeral Home, Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 27, in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Friends and family are asked to meet at the church.

George P. Durko, Sr., 82, of Cokeburg, died Sunday, February 23, 2014.

Linda L. Greco, 75, of Washington, died Saturday. February 22, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, following a lengthy illness.

Sportsman, father and grandfather

Gary Lee Grimes Sr., 58, of Brownsville, died Saturday, February 22, 2014.

He was born Sunday, January 29, 1956, in Charleroi, a son of Mary Belle (Porter) Grimes and the late George Lesley Grimes.

He was a member of Roscoe Sportsman Club.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Lori Okorn Grimes; his mother, Mary Grimes; two sons, Gary L. Grimes Jr. of Brownsville and Charles L. Grimes and his fiancée Anna of Star Junction; three sisters and two brothers, Georgette (Mike) Baker of Granville, Tammy (Jeff) Milosovich of North Charleroi, Scott (Terri) Grimes of Charleroi, George (Jennifer) Grimes of Granville and Holly (Dave) Rausch of Smithton; two granddaughters, Gracieana and Gabriella Grimes; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Mariscotti Funeral Home Inc., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth Street, California.

Loved spending time with grandchildren

Helen Guidas, 89, of Washington, died Sunday, February 23, 2014, in Consulate Health Care, North Strabane Township.

She was born March 28, 1924, in Washington, a daughter of Joseph and Katherine O’Senkoski Yaros.

Mrs. Guidas was Catholic and a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church and then later Immaculate Conception Church, both in Washington.

She loved travelling to tropical destinations, cooking, shopping, crocheting and knitting. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Tygart Valley Glass Co. and Metro Glass employed Mrs. Guidas as a production worker in their shop. She was a graduate of Pittsburgh Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician.

Deceased are her first husband, Herbert Dollish, in 1993; her second husband, John Guidas; and two sisters, Stella Smith and Mary Schriskey.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah (John) Harter of Washington; a son, Dennis (Kathe) Dollish of Canonsburg; two grandchildren, Jon Harter of Washington and Hannah Dollish of Canonsburg; a sister, Jennie Gravel; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 1290 Jefferson Avenue, Washington, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, with the Rev. Thomas D. O’Neil officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.

Local farmer and union member

Dennis E. McCollum, 83, of Waynesburg, and formerly of Holbrook, died unexpectedly at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014, in Washington Hospital, from injuries received in a fall one month ago.

He was born May 28, 1930, in Nineveh, a son of the late J. Hallie and Wilma Hoge McCollum, and had resided in the Holbrook area from 1960 until moving to Waynesburg in 2007.

Mr. McCollum was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg, where he served as head usher for more than 20 years, and a member and president of Bethany Cemetery Board of Directors. He also enjoyed listening to gospel music.

Mr. McCollum was last employed as a foreman/superintendent for Pace Pipeline of Delmont and was with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 66 for more than 50 years prior to retiring in 1992. He was also a self-employed farmer, raising milk cows, sheep and beef cattle most of his adult life and as long as his health permitted.

On November 13, 1948, he married Joy Stockdale, who died December 20, 2006.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and his wife, are two brothers, Clifford and J. Hallie “Junior” McCollum, Jr., and an infant sister, Clara Jane McCollum.

Surviving are a son, Phillip (Myleen) McCollum of Sycamore; two daughters, Marilyn (James) Facemire and Ruth Ann McCollum, both of Waynesburg; four grandchildren, Seann P. McCollum of Center Township, Michael D. (Carie) Facemire of Sunbury, Mass., Carrie J. Sommers of Jefferson, Ga., and Anna B. Pryce of Las Vegas, Nev.; five great-grandchildren, Julia and Hannah McCollum, Jack and Max Facemire and Cassie Sommers; two sisters, Imogene Riggle of Genesee and Jaunietta Denman of Washington; a goddaughter, Sue (Richard) Ely of Sycamore; and several nieces and nephews.

Owner/president of James A. Rabe Funeral Home

Mary Beth Rabe Menzler, 54, lifelong resident of Donora, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 22, 2014, surrounded by her family in her home.

She was born January 28, 1960, in North Charleroi, a daughter of the late James A. and Doris Whirlow Rabe.

Mrs. Menzler graduated from Ringgold High School in 1978 and attended California University of Pennsylvania, followed by the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, where she earned her degree in 1982.

In 1984, Mrs. Menzler became a licensed funeral director. She worked alongside her father, the late James A. Rabe, and after his passing in 2005, she became the owner and president of James A. Rabe Funeral Home in Donora.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Monessen 205, National Funeral Director’s Association, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, Southwestern Pennsylvania Funeral Director’s Association and Mon-Valley Funeral Directors.

In addition to her parents, deceased is her brother-in-law James A. Fronzaglio, who passed away in 2010. Also deceased are her dogs, Brandy and Molly.

Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Robert J. Menzler; two sons, Robert Stephen (Sarah) Menzler of Glenshaw and Tyler Rabe Menzler (Joan Bradbury) of Harrisburg; a daughter, Megan Elizabeth (Michael) Parry of Donora; a grandson, Gavin Michael Parry; a sister, Mrs. Denise Fronzaglio of Donora; two nephews, James Alan (Diana) and Phillip Arthur Fronzaglio, both of Donora; a great-niece, Adriana Ann Fronzaglio; an aunt, Mary Jane Helfrich of New Stanton; and a cousin, Christopher (Melanie) Helfrich and family of Greensburg.

She also leaves her beloved black lab, Gunner James.

Air Force lieutenant colonel and teacher

J. Robert Pochron, 86, of Rices Landing (Dry Tavern), died Saturday, February 22, 2014, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.

He was born February 10, 1928, in Palmer, a son of the late John S. and Mary Grabiak Pochron.

Mr. Pochron was a 1945 graduate of German Township High School and a 1949 graduate of Waynesburg College. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from the Air Force Reserve as a lieutenant colonel. Mr. Pochron was a retired school teacher with 35 years of service from Jefferson-Morgan School District.

He was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Parish, Greene County Retired Teachers Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association, AARP, Adah Gun Club and American Legion Post 816, Rices Landing.

On June 21, 1958, he married Vivian Lee Black, who survives.

Also surviving are a brother, James “JC” (Ruth) Pochron of Frederick, Md.; two nephews, John (Karen) Pochron of Dry Tavern and Mark (Lori) Pochron of Rices Landing; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Deceased is a brother, John W. Pochron Sr.

Marine and outdoorsman

George Robert Toland, 61, of Claysville, died Saturday, February 22, 2014, in his home.

He was born June 22, 1952, in Washington, a son of Olive Heath Toland of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and the late Jesse Toland.

Mr. Toland served in the Marine Corps from March 30, 1972, until his honorable discharge March 29, 1974, with a rank of lance corporal.

On August 31, 1974, he married Dolores “Dolly” Lindley, who survives.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Toland was a member of First Christian Church, West Alexander.

Deceased are two brothers, Donald and Charles Conaway, and two sisters, Eileen Toland and Connie Endsley.

Surviving are a son, Michael (Sarah) Toland of Triadelphia, W.Va.; a daughter, Michelle (Keith) Moore of Washington; three brothers, Dewain (Patricia) Toland, Gaylord “Shorty” (Kathy) Toland and Raymond (Sue) Toland, all of Claysville; a sister, Donna Miles of Claysville; and four grandchildren, Chloe and Wyatt Toland and Kyra and Brandt Moore.

50-year member of Third Presbyterian Church

Shirley Elizabeth White, 78, of Washington, died Saturday, February 22, 2014, in Consulate Health Care of North Strabane. Gateway Hospice was her caregiver.

She was born April 27, 1935, in Washington, a daughter of the late Harold Orville White and Helen E. Clemens White.

Ms. White was a 1953 graduate of Washington High School. During her senior year in high school, she began working at Cameron Coca-Cola, and continued working for the Cameron family for the next 43 years, retiring as office manager.

She loved vacationing with her family at Ocean Isle, S.C., and Seven Springs Resort.

Ms. White was a 50-year member of Third United Presbyterian Church, now known as New Hope Church.

Surviving are a sister, Peg Wilson of Washington; three nieces, Shirley Dean (Jim) Williams, Debbie Wilson and Denise Lago; a nephew, George “Butch” (Cyndi) Wilson; great-nieces Megan and Morgan Wilson and Elizabeth and Victoria Lago; great-nephews Patrick (Jasmine) Williams, Nicholas Williams, Mitchell Wilson and Matthew Lago; great-great-nephew Henry Williams; great-great-niece Dagny Williams; and her closest friends, Dick Cameron and Donna Staso.

Deceased is a brother, David Wayne White.
