Raised Limousin cattle

William Lawrence Whipkey Sr., 81, of Holbrook, died at 1:15 a.m., Friday, February 28, 2014, in his home. He was in failing health the past year.

He was born August 21, 1932, in East Finley Township, Washington County, a son of the late Fred and Sadie Cumberledge Whipkey.

He resided in the Richhill Township, Greene County, area since 1957.

Mr. Whipkey attended the former Richhill Township High School in Wind Ridge.

He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a corporal with the U.S. Army in the 1660 Headquarters Company, 2nd Armored Division.

Mr. Whipkey was a member of the former Wind Ridge Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life member of Waynesburg VFW Post 4793, a life member of Wind Ridge Sportsman’s Club and a member of Greene County Farm Bureau.

He was a self-employed farmer all his life, raising Limousin cattle and was a life member of North American Limousin Association.

Mr. Whipkey was employed in pipeline construction in his early years and a member of Locals 132 and 66 for more than 10 years.

He was last employed by PennDOT for more than 25 years, retiring in 1994 as a foreman.

On January 7, 1955, he married Ruth Ellen “Dolly” Courtwright, who died August 16, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, William L. Whipkey Jr., husband of Donna Whipkey, and Charles Lee, husband of Katrina Whipkey, both of Holbrook; three daughters, Barbara Darlene, wife of Ronald Robison, and Teresa, wife of Jeff Fox, both of Holbrook, and Bobbie F., wife of Shawn Grecoe, of Lone Pine; nine grandchildren, Matthew and Benji Robison, Chris and Steven Whipkey, Daniel Fox, Wyatt Lee and Emmitt Whipkey and Alexus and Ryan Grecoe; six great-grandchildren, Abigail, Henry and Clara Robison and Levi, MacKenzie and Morgan Whipkey; a brother, Russell Whipkey of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are two brothers, Charles and Ray Whipkey, and four sisters, Manerva Whipkey, Helen Moore, Pauline Dailey and Betty Blake.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, in Rush Funeral Home Inc. Rogersville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3. Interment will follow in Centennial Cemetery, Aleppo Township.
