Harold Melvin Stockdale, 89, of Center Township, Greene County, died at 10:09 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy illness, which was treated by the exceptional aid of Amedisys Hospice for the past two weeks.
He was born January 21, 1924, in Center Township, Greene County, a son of the late Thomas Melvin and Lenora Willison Stockdale, and resided in Center Township his entire life.
Mr. Stockdale was a member of Rogersville United Methodist Church.
He attended the former Rogersville High School and was a former member of Moose Lodge, Eagles and a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Waynesburg.
He was formerly employed as a truck driver for W.P.L.E. for several years, prior to retiring as a heavy equipment operator for Operator Engineers 132, after several years.
Mr. Stockdale enjoyed hunting, fishing, practicing taxidermy, metal and wood working, and working his farm, where he raised horses and cattle.
On January 19, 1943, he married Norma Huffman, who survives.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Gary, husband of Carol Stockdale, and Larry Stockdale, both of Rogersville; two daughters, Marietta, wife of Met (Worthy) Fox, and P. Darlene, wife of Kevin Moore, both of Rogersville; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Jeffry Lynn Stockdale, and a daughter, Sue Ella Stockdale, who both died in infancy; a half-brother, Earl Hopkins; and a half-sister, Helen Bradley.
