Bell Telephone operator active in Catholic Daughters
Martha F. “Murph” Mast, 91, formerly of Grant Street, Washington, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington.
She was born June 17, 1922, in Washington, a daughter of James A. and Anna Lutzenkirtchen Fisher.
Mrs. Mast was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, where she was active in Catholic Daughters and I.C. Friendship Club.
For 30 years, she was employed by Bell Telephone Co. as an operator and was a member of Telephone Pioneers.
She was an avid sports fan of the Pirates, Penguins, Celtics and Steelers, even attending two Super Bowls in the 1970s. She also enjoyed trips to the casino.
On March 31, 1951, in Immaculate Conception Church, she married Robert Mast, who died December. 31, 2001.
Surviving are three sons, Mike (Carla) Mast, Mark (Kim) Mast and Matt Mast, all of Washington; four grandchildren, Nicolas (Ali) Mast and Melinda, Nathan and Devin Mast; two nieces, Kathy Walther and Rosemary Dittman; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was looking forward to the birth of her first great-granddaughter.
Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a brother, Stephen Fisher, and three sisters, Irene Johnson, Elizabeth Hall and Catherine Lindley.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hummell & Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M. Jones, funeral director. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 9, in Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, with the Rev. Pat Barkey as celebrant. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, South Strabane Township.
