The names of a deceased brother, Arthur Rex “Junior” McCardle, and her stepfather, Harold (Hallie) Howard, were incorrect.

Devoted in her faith

Mary Elaine Gladish, 65, of Morgantown, W.Va., passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, with her family at her side.

She was born in Bentleyville September 1, 1948, a daughter of the late William Coulson and the late Mary Evanosky Coulson.

Mrs. Gladish was devoted in her faith and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Star City, W.Va. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and the outdoors.

Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Frederick John Gladish; a son, Nathaniel Eric Gladish of Morgantown; and a brother, William Coulson and wife Barbara of Bentleyville.

In keeping with Mrs. Gladish’s wishes, cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 122 South High Street, Morgantown, WV 26505.

Beloved grandfather

Richard G. Herceg, 71, of Washington, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, in his home.

He was born December 26, 1942, in Washington, a son of George Herceg of Washington, who survives, and the late Mary Jane Lantosh Herceg.

Mr. Herceg was Protestant and a man of great faith.

He enjoyed fishing and loved all sports, especially basketball, baseball and football. He also enjoyed staying in touch with his former co-workers at Washington Grocers Association and Hometown Coffee, where he was employed as a longtime warehouse manager.

On February 14, 1972, he married Donna D. Lewis, who died October 25, 2011.

Surviving is a stepdaughter, Alice (Mitch) Wimert of Washington, with whom he made his home.

Also surviving are three grandchildren, Zachary, Joshua and Emily Wimert; a sister, Janet (Steve) Kochuba of Glassport; and three nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Wednesday, January 8, in Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 1290 Jefferson Avenue, Washington, with Pastor Paul Peternel officiating.

Worked for Black Box Corp.

Joan Rowene Lewis, 80, of Houston, died Saturday, January 4, 2014, in Canonsburg Hospital.

She was born April 13, 1933, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Frank and Nettie Patzsch Lewis.

A lifetime area resident, she was a member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school in her younger years.

Prior to retirement, she worked in assembly for Black Box Corp. and previously for RCA.

Surviving are a brother, Robert Lewis of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Howard Lewis, and five sisters, Emma Cox, Dorothy Bell, Helen Lewis, Jane Farabee and Betty Backner.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Bell Telephone operator active in Catholic Daughters

Martha F. “Murph” Mast, 91, formerly of Grant Street, Washington, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born June 17, 1922, in Washington, a daughter of James A. and Anna Lutzenkirtchen Fisher.

Mrs. Mast was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, where she was active in Catholic Daughters and I.C. Friendship Club.

For 30 years, she was employed by Bell Telephone Co. as an operator and was a member of Telephone Pioneers.

She was an avid sports fan of the Pirates, Penguins, Celtics and Steelers, even attending two Super Bowls in the 1970s. She also enjoyed trips to the casino.

On March 31, 1951, in Immaculate Conception Church, she married Robert Mast, who died December. 31, 2001.

Surviving are three sons, Mike (Carla) Mast, Mark (Kim) Mast and Matt Mast, all of Washington; four grandchildren, Nicolas (Ali) Mast and Melinda, Nathan and Devin Mast; two nieces, Kathy Walther and Rosemary Dittman; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was looking forward to the birth of her first great-granddaughter.

Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a brother, Stephen Fisher, and three sisters, Irene Johnson, Elizabeth Hall and Catherine Lindley.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hummell & Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M. Jones, funeral director. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 9, in Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, with the Rev. Pat Barkey as celebrant. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, South Strabane Township. Formerly of Fallowfield Township

Luther R. Sheets, 82, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014, in his Port St. Lucie, Fla., home.

He was born in Luzerne Township, a son of Alfred and Rena Sheets.

Mr. Sheets grew up in Beallsville, with his six brothers, Jackson, Robert, William, Wilber, all deceased, Benjamin of San Marcos, Calif., and Bruce of Beallsville; and two sisters, Jessie Hughes, deceased, and Dawn Pickens of Washington.

He was married to Donna Sphar for 35 years, living in Fallowfield Township, until her passing in 1986. They had three children, Luther D. Sheets of Speers, Cindy Mayernik of Sharpsville and Brenda Davis of Pataskala, Ohio.

In addition to his three children, surviving are his wife, Barbara Schmidt, whom he married in 1990; three stepchildren, Cathleen Schmidt of Abington, Md., Diane Schmidt of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Tom and wife Teresa Schmidt of Chesapeake, Va.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sheets was employed by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania for 42 years, until his retirement.

He was a member and past master of Masonic Lodge 615 in Charleroi.

Mr. Sheets was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army with the rank of sergeant, after being stationed in occupied Japan and serving during the Korean War. His armor unit was among the first U.S. troops to enter the conflict, and he was awarded several military citations, including the Combat Infantryman Badge.

He had a passion for golf, reading and was a talented stained-glass craftsman.

A private memorial service and burial in Maple Creek Cemetery, Fallowfield Township, is planned. A celebration of his life with friends and family will be held in his hometown in the spring.

Avid rider was motorcycle mechanic

Gary J. “Smitty” Smith, 62, of Mt. Morris, died at 4:40 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014, in his home, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Thursday, November 22, 1951, in Waynesburg, a son of the late John E. “Jack” Smith and Mary Ann Aliucci Smith.

Mr. Smith enjoyed motorcyles. He was an avid rider and was also a motorcycle mechanic. He was owner-operator of S&S Kawasaki and Suzuki Motorcycle Shop in Morgantown W,Va. He also worked as a mechanic for Barnhart Honda in Ruff Creek.

Surviving are a daughter, Tacia and husband Thomas Thompson of Morgantown; three grandchildren, Madeleine Thompson, Thomas Thompson and Aaron Thompson; a niece, Lori “Chick” Smith of Mt. Morris; and two nephews, John E. Smith III and Rick Smith, both of Mt. Morris.

Deceased is a brother, John E. “Jack” Smith II.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Harry Vaunt “Bugsy” Ward Jr., 80, of Washington, died Monday, January 6, 2014, in Humbert Lane Care Centre, South Strabane Township.

He was born February 14, 1933, in Washington, a son of Harry V. Ward Sr. and Margaret Labozzo Ward.

Mr. Ward was employed as a packer for Brockway Glass Co. for 33 years.

He enjoyed walking, playing basketball and ping-pong, and he loved cats.

Mr. Ward was married to Carmella Ward, who died September 16, 2011.

Surviving are a sister, Betty Ruetschi of Prosperity; and two brothers, Robert Ward of Washington and Don Ward of Michigan.

Deceased are two sisters, Doreen Ward and Shirley Orsky.

At the request of the deceased, all services are private. Arrangements are being handled by William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.

Houston pet owner had a variety of interests

Susan Jack Williams, 67, of Houston, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, following a three-year battle with cancer.

She was born September 30, 1946, in Easton, a daughter of the late Russell Samuel and Mary Simpson Williams.

Ms. Williams lived in Easton before moving to Houston in 1952.

Surviving are a brother, Russell Samuel Williams Jr. of Madison, Wis., and David Lee Lamansky, her lover, companion and friend for 35 years.

She led a quiet life and had a variety of interests, including reading, the arts and sciences and tending to her numerous pets. She especially enjoyed discussing in length the many topics she and David were reading about.

Friends and acquaintances will sadly miss this interesting and wonderful person.

Welder enjoyed playing horseshoes

Phillip Stephen Wolanski, 43, of Weirton, W.Va., died Sunday, January 5, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born September 20, 1970, in Washington, a son of Rita James Wolanski of Weirton and the late Thomas Wolanski.

Mr. Wolanski was a welder.

He enjoyed playing horseshoes and watching football and old Western movies.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his children, Brooke and Seth Bonacci and Jina Burns, all of Burgettstown; a brother, Thomas (Cara) Wolanski of Paris; sisters Theresa (Dennis) McCuean of Chippewa and Debbie (Barry) Main of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
