Avid hunter, fisherman loved driving his truck

Herbert Chadwick Sr., 78, of Washington, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Washington County Health Center.

He was born December 15, 1935, in Sycamore, a son of Thomas William Chadwick and Hazel Oliver Kelley Chadwick.

Mr. Chadwick worked for Chadwick Construction and was a truck driver at Sorice Trucking. He served in the U.S. National Guard Reserves.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved driving his truck.

Mr. Chadwick was married to Patricia J. Cassidy, who died July 25, 1987.

Surviving are two sons, Herbert Chadwick Jr. of Washington and Thomas J. (Denise) Chadwick of Nineveh; two daughters, Carrie (John) Mounts of Taylorstown and Kathleen Williams of Washington; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Deceased are four brothers, Bill, John, Duane and Richard; two sisters, Viola and Mary; and two infant children.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Home, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 10, with Pastor Tim Lindsay officiating. Burial will follow in West Union Cemetery, Greene County.

Avid sports fan

Mark Alan DeFabbo, 54, of Centerville, died unexpectedly Monday, January 6, 2014, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He was born January 6, 1960, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Innocent “Cinze” and Marcella Hyneckeal DeFabbo.

Mr. DeFabbo was a 1978 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School, where he was a three-year member of the football team.

For the past 33 years, he was employed by the Centerville Borough road department as crew chief. For many years, he served as a union steward of Teamsters Local 833.

He enjoyed riding his Harley every Sunday and tinkering with his 1969 Chevelle.

An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed Steelers football, Pirates baseball and Pittsburgh Penguins hockey. Spending time fishing and going to Plantation Park, a family camp in Mercer, brought him special enjoyment.

Surviving is a daughter, Gena Nicole DeFabbo of Centerville; a brother, Thomas DeFabbo (Aleta) of Vestaburg; an aunt, Virginia Bigrigg of Richeyville; his companion, Danyale Bennett of Centerville; his former wife, Dana Frazee of Fredericktown; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Gary DeFabbo, who died December 13, 2004.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 10 with the Rev. Paul Grunebach officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg.

A memorial service for Warren Wendell Johnson, who died December 21, 2013, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 10, in Presbyterian SeniorCare Chapel, 835 South Main Street, Washington. A light luncheon will be served following the service in the chapel. Burial to follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.

Loved spending time with family

Frances W. Kovacicek, 80, of Washington, died Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in her home.

She was born May 6, 1933, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Faye and Anne Stevens.

Mrs. Kovacicek attended Washington High School and went on to work as a packer for Brockway Glass for 29 years. She retired, after 20 years of service, from the housekeeping department of Presbyterian SeniorCare.

She loved spending time with her family, as well as shopping, puzzle books and especially her hummingbirds.

On July 8, 1961, in Pigeon Creek Church, she married Frank Kovacicek, who died May 8, 2000.

Surviving are a son, Frank L. (Tina) Kovacicek of Washington; a daughter, Lesa L. (Charles “Harley” Avery) Kovacicek of Washington; and a sister, Dorothy Herceg of Washington.

She also leaves behind her beloved furry friends, Daisy and Lexi.

Deceased are two brothers, Vernon and Roy Stevens.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, January 10. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery, Washington.

Veteran was retired teacher

John Krajnak, 83, of Ellsworth, died Monday, January 6, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington.

Born in Wyano, May 6, 1930, he was a son of Joseph and Mary Lesicako Krajnak.

Mr. Krajnak was a retired high school teacher for the Bethlehem-Center Area School District, where he taught for 25 years. Before that, he taught at the former Mon Valley Catholic High School. He also worked as a race teller at Meadows Racetrack for many years.

Mr. Krajnak was a Korean War veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Ave Maria Parish in Bentleyville, Knight of Columbus Council 5826 in Bentleyville, Bentleyville American Legion Post 165, Bentleyville Lithuanian Club and a social member of Croatian Club, Cokeburg.

Mr. Krajnak was a licensed ham radio operator, United States of America Federal Communications Commission Amateur Radio License N3VDD.

Surviving are two sons, John Krajnak of Ellsworth and Justin Krajnak of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Denise and William Curtis of Harmony, Kathleen Aglio of Brentwood and Tammy and Brian Tyson of Bentleyville; a brother, George Krajnak of Athens, Ohio; a sister, Margaret Refosco of McDonald; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; five stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Deceased are his wife, Theresa Kupar Krajnak, who died in 2008, and brother Joseph Krajnak.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Leonard M. Pavlic Funeral Homes Inc., 405 Main Street, Bentleyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 9, in Ave Maria Parish, Bentleyville. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Township. Military rites will be accorded by Bentleyville American Legion Post 165.

Former Waynesburg resident

Ronald Wayne Price, 65, of Oceana, W.Va., formerly of Waynesburg, died suddenly January 5, 2014, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.

He was born December 4, 1948, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Curtis and Norma Jean Taylor Price.

Mr. Price worked at Southern Amusement in Logan, W.Va. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing his guitars and building projects at his home.

He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Lisa Eddy and her husband, Stanley, of Rices Landing, and Melissa Spadaccino and her husband, Don, of Churchville. Mr. Price was the proud grandfather of Katelyn, Nicholas and Dominick. Also surviving are three brothers, James Price (Karen) of Avella, Curtis Price (Sharon) of Waynesburg and Steven Price (Tina) of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of services, Friday, January 10, in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High Street, Waynesburg, with the Rev. William Parker officiating. Cremation will follow services.

Eugene E. “Oce” Riggle, 86, of Washington, died Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

The Church of Jesus Christ member

Sara Vancik, 99, of Monongahela, died Monday, January 6, 2014, in Victoria House, Monessen.

She was born June 3, 1914, in Saint John, Kan., a daughter of Rev. W.H. and Sadie Mains Cadman.

Mrs. Vancik resided in Pennsylvania since 1919. She was a 1932 graduate of Monongahela High School, and then attended the Douglas School of Business in Charleroi.

She was employed at the former First National Bank in Monongahela for several years, before starting her family.

She was a lifelong active member of The Church of Jesus Christ. She was a member of Ladies Uplift Circle, founded and organized by her mother in 1920. After her mother’s death in 1959, Mrs. Vancik took on her mother’s work of completing and publishing the Concordance of the Book of Mormon. It was presented to the Church in 1974.

After the completion of the concordance, her dream of living among the Native American population became a reality when she and her husband, Paul, were given permission to live on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona. For 10 years, they helped at the mission and became lifelong friends with many of the native people. Mrs. Vancik used her crafting skills, crocheting hundreds of baby layettes and blankets, and hand-delivered them to the local Native American hospital. She crocheted baby layettes and blankets until she was 97.

Mrs. Vancik was an eager participant in other church events, including Sunday school, vacation Bible school and church conferences, where she was able to worship with a worldwide membership. She loved the inspirational hymns and served as church organist for many years, and was also a piano and organ teacher and played organ for the Frye Funeral Home when needed.

She is survived by four daughters, Sara Pauwels and husband John of Monessen, Paulette Griffith and husband Joe of Waddell, Ariz., Cathy Vancik-Davis and husband Jim of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Karen Smith and husband Chuck of New Eagle; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Paul A. Vancik, who died December 14, 1985; a daughter, Marilyn Collins, who died in 1991; and three sisters, Ruth Mountain, Mabel Bickerton and Grace Landrey.

The Victoria House and Amedisys Hospice staff provided Mrs. Vancik with great compassion and care before her death.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, and from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of funeral services, Saturday, January 11, in The Church of Jesus Christ, 525 Sixth Street, Monongahela, with elders Robert, Joshua and Jeremy Nicklow officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela.

Veteran was expert ?marksman

Anthony S. Weishner Sr., 93, of Canonsburg, died Saturday, January 4, 2014, in Canonsburg Hospital.

He was born March 5, 1920, in Marianna, a son of Joe and Eva Zemaitis Weishner, who emigrated from Lithuania.

Mr. Weishner attended schools in Canonsburg and Bridgeville.

He worked for Pennsylvania Transformer for many years. In 1953, he was appointed constable of Third Ward of Canonsburg, where he served for 40 years.

Mr. Weishner was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He was proud to be qualified as an expert marksman with the Thompson submachine gun, .30 caliber rifle and carbine. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and American Defense Ribbon.

He also graduated from the Fire Chiefs Association of Allegheny County Fire School.

Prior to his military service, he served two years with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Mr. Weishner was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, with his son, Tony Jr., as his favorite golfing buddy.

Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Guzell of Canonsburg; two sons, Anthony S. Weishner Jr. (Judy) and Mark Weishner, both of Canonsburg; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Deceased are a sister and eight brothers.

Friends will be received to celebrate Mr. Weishner’s life from 10 a.m. to noon, the time of a Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, January 10, in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Muse, with the Rev. George T. DeVille as celebrant. Interment will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Arrangements are being handled by McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342, Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor.
